Sophomores Win Two Projects for Peace Grants

Three Colby students won two Projects for
Peace grants that will take them to Africa
and Central America on educational
missions this summer.
Mackenzie Kennedy ’16 of Marietta, Ga., will
travel to Katito, Kenya, to start the Tumaini
(Hope) Learning and Development Center for
girls orphaned as a result of AIDS. Sarah
LoTemplio ’16 of Morrisonville, N.Y., and
Catherine McClure ’16 of Barkhamsted, Conn., will travel to Nicaragua for Project Cuidamos, an initiative
they proposed to address the effects of poverty and environmental injustice there.
The proposals were two among 127 winning projects awarded $10,000 each in March. Projects for Peace
was the vision of the late philanthropist Kathryn W. Davis beginning in 2007 on the occasion of her 100th
birthday. Until her death, at 106 in 2013, she was intent on motivating tomorrow’s promising leaders by
challenging them to find ways to “prepare for peace.”
The Davis family honored her legacy by continuing to fund Projects for Peace. The initiative invites any
undergraduates at the 91 American colleges and universities that are partners in the Davis United World
College Scholars Program (http://www.davisuwcscholars.org) to compete for these grants.
This year’s successful proposals are the 13th and 14th Projects for Peace grants awarded to Colby
students.
“We are pleased to once again help young people launch some initiatives that will bring new energy and
ideas to improving the prospects for peace in the world,” said Philip O. Geier, executive director of the
Davis United World College Scholars Program, which administers Projects for Peace.
