HEALTH EDUCATION REFORM

WHY CHANGE?
Currently format is not
conducive to changing times
 New format will help overall
health
 This will help schools achieve
goals set by the Common Core
and organizations such as
SHAPE America.



CURRENT SCHEDULE BY GRADE

5th Grade-Puberty and Aids
Boys and girls informed about changes in their body
in separate rooms
 Also shown basic video about Aids

SIXTH

GRADE
Basic knowledge about nutrition, drugs and
alcohol, injuries, and puberty is presented.

Puberty video is the only thing shown regarding the
topic.
SEVENTH GRADE

Knowledge from sixth grade is built upon
EIGHTH GRADE
Build upon 7th grade knowledge.
 1st Aid is presented
 Birth Video shown for the 1st time

NINTH GRADE
Build upon knowledge from 8th grade.
 More details given on sex education.
 Abstinence is mainly stressed

ELEVENTH GRADE
Mental Health is discussed
 Topics include depression, suicide, various
mental diseases such as schizophrenia, anxiety,
and bipolar disorder

TWELFTH GRADE
Sex education. Everything from birth, to different
types of contraceptives, to abortion
 In-depth biology of sex organs discussed
 Another birth video is shown

PROBLEMS

Information is learned too late or at the wrong
time.


Students already partaking in activities
Prime example is 12th Grade
Majority of students already having sex
 Know nearly all information by senior year

MY PLAN BY GRADE

Kindergarten- Bathing Suit Talk
Will make students learn early on where not to let
someone touch them
 Simple, but often overlooked conversation
 No further details needed at this age or until 5th
grade

FIFTH GRADE
Puberty talk only
 Save Aids video for 6th grade
 Too young to understand premise of video

SIXTH GRADE
More information on everything already taught.
 Nearly all information learned by the end of 7th
grade currently will be learned by the end of
sixth.
 Will make students have a better base moving
forward

SEVENTH GRADE
Continue to add to base and have students up to
8th grade level currently.
 Birth video will remain in eight grade

EIGHT GRADE
Topics will be up to freshmen level currently
 Birth video will remain in 8th grade

NINTH GRADE
Senior year level health
 All topics of sex education will be discussed
 Students are becoming sexually active sooner
than before
 Will prepare them to be safer throughout high
school

ELEVENTH GRADE

Class as usual with 1 exception

Develop a stress management plan as stated in State
Standard: 2.1.12.E.4
No changes as this is a good time period for the
discussion of mental health
 Can’t move drivers Education from 10th grade
due to driving age

TWELFTH GRADE

Students will learn how to make a fitness plan


Students will learn to develop a nutrition plan


Is mentioned under state requirement: 2.6.12.A.2
This will help with their fitness plan.
More in depth 1st Aid will be demonstrated.
Is mentioned under state requirement: 2.1.12.D.6
 Will do hands on 1st Aid with actual bandages and
wraps
 CPR will also be taught and certified

TIMES CHANGE
Being proactive is better than waiting
 Kids are engaging in adult activities sooner
 Can’t worry about their maturity

NOTHING TO LOSE, ALL TO GAIN
Worst case scenario nothing changes
 No harm would be done and you go back to
previous system
 Experimenting is the only way to improve

