Wee Green Cinema Project 2015
Are you passionate about safeguarding our shared planet? Love film? Want to know
Scotland better?
Then apply today to be part of a dream team of volunteers bringing green global cinema
to the streets and glens of Scotland.
Take One Action is now recruiting for a team of volunteers to take our brand new bike & solar
powered "Wee Green Cinema" to communities and festivals over the coming year. If you're an
outgoing, can-do adventurer, aged 16-30, undaunted by early starts, long days, Scottish weather
and LOTS of fun, with min 4 weekends to spare from March 2015 – October 2015 then get in touch
with us now!
1. About us
TAKE ONE ACTION is an independent Scottish charity celebrating the people and movies that are
changing the world, from Argyll to Zimbabwe. We believe small actions lead to big ones, and that
we all make a difference.
“Take One Action’s focus on empowering communities to engage with global
and environmental issues through great film is unique in the UK. … This work is
really, really important.” Ken Loach, patron
“Want to change the world but not sure where to start? This festival will rouse
you into action.” The Guardian
“Take One Action bring together the most acclaimed, globally conscious movies
of the year” New Internationalist
"Take One Action brings to light stories from across the planet which – like
South Africa's injustices, courage and beauty – were once
hidden." Archbishop Desmond Tutu
WE WORK TO ENSURE THAT more people watch more world-class films about issues of social and
environmental change and concern – more effectively and communally. WE CURATE films, opportunities and
networks, in Scotland, with a global lens. We enable more people to make connections – tangible, individual
and collective – between their lives and the extraordinary, international stories revealed on film (and over cups
of tea). WE HOPE to inspire and empower more people to take creative, impactful steps to make the world a
better place – bit by bit, and sometimes in landslides, changing the local, national and global behaviours which
underpin a fairer and more sustainable world.
2. What we want to do, with your support
We want to create, tour and make available to groups around Scotland a pop-up solar and bikepowered cinema which will imaginatively bring film screenings, education and action about
sustainable living and environmental activism to new audiences, both young and old.
3. Why
We want to inspire more action for sustainable living in Scotland, playing our part to help Scots create more
imaginative, simple and bold inroads to an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 (Scotland’s current
ambitious commitment). We also want to take our core message and experience – powerful, creative stories of
social change - into communities that don’t have access to cinema (a collective experience that we powerfully
couple with collective conversation). Having organized a number of highly successful bike-powered screenings
in Edinburgh and Glasgow, we know that this innovative participatory form of screening, where the audience
powers the event, and come face-to-face with sustainable innovation, attracts new people who wouldn’t
otherwise get involved in social change.
4. How it’s going to work

You’ll apply to join our 12 to 15 person team (details below).
If selected, you’ll choose four or five weekends from a list of around 12 events we’ll be running to
volunteer at. On those dates you’ll join 3 or 4 others who will take the tent on the road to whatever
festival or event we’re at that weekend.
Most of our the events will run over a weekend so typically volunteering will take up all or most of
Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. In some cases however we may be at an event longer so flexibility will
be required. A typical weekend will include transporting the cinema to the event, erecting the tent and
all equipment, running two or three screenings (60 – 90 minutes) per day and any supporting
workshops/events and at the end of the event taking down the tent and returning all equipment to
storage.
We’ll organise training for you to learn all about the pop-up: our planning; how we physically put up the
tent; how to set up and run the bike and solar kit… and about Take One Action: how we can take our
message of green global empowerment out into Scotland.
Our staff team will find inspiring films and opportunities to use the Wee Green Cinema in urban
communities and amazing rural locations across Scotland. The pop-up will go out 10 - 12 one-off
weekends through to September, visiting as many of Scotland’s well known festivals and summer
events as we can. Each volunteer will commit to join the team for a minimum of 4 events between
March and October.
In addition, you’ll be encouraged to join programme planning sessions for the events you’re involved in,
generally weekday evenings in our favourite cafes in Edinburgh; and have the opportunity to see some
great films.
You’ll gain experience in practical project management, film programming and audience engagement
and interaction. Stick with us – contribute your energy and ideas – and we’ll give you a glowing
reference to take away at the end of the summer, and some amazing experiences to remember forever.
5. What we’re looking for


Outgoing, can-do adventurers, ideally based near Edinburgh, aged 16-30, undaunted by early starts,
long days, Scottish weather and LOTS of fun, with a minimum of 4 weekends to spare from March 2015
to October 2015.
Any of these skills proven through some experience you can tell us about could be an advantage, but if
you’re enthused by the project for whatever reason we’d love to know why and what you think you
could bring:
o working with the general public
o techy (a bit of electronic/tech experience)
o working with children or young people (disclosure not required)
o knowledge of international development, community education or environmentalism
o creative practical skills you could help children/families/public learn (arts, crafts, green-fingers,
etc)
Please note we’d prefer people to be based near to or in Edinburgh – to minimize travel expenses
and facilitate early morning access to our offices and the Wee Green Cinema store. If you’re outside
Edinburgh but still very keen then get in touch and we can discuss options for your participation. Required
travel outwith Edinburgh, overnight accommodation (if not staying “in camp” in the pop-up) and meal expenses
