U4 D1 Ordered Pairs.notebook March 31, 2017 The xy-plane is known as the Cartesian plane. Unit 4: Linear Functions 4-1: Ordered Pairs and Linear Functions The coordinates of a point on the Cartesian plane form an ordered pair, (x , y). Opening Activity: • Read page 80 and use it to fill in the boxes on the given diagram. A relation is a pattern that connects two sets of data. A linear relation will be a straight line when graphed. When each x-value has only one corresponding y-value, the relation is called a function. When graphed, a function will touch any vertical line only once. Mar 2912:44 PM Mar 2912:45 PM Example 1: a) Graph the given points on the grid. Example 2: For each table of values, find the patterns in both the x- and y-values and use the pattern to fill in the remainder of the table. A(-1,5) B(-3,-4) C(4, 6) D(0,-3) E(5,0) F(3,-1) G(0,0) H(-6,2) I(2,1) J(-2,0) x 1 1 3 y 2 4 6 x 3 6 9 y 5 10 15 b) State the coordinates of three points that form a linear relation. Example 3: Determine whether each pattern represents i) a linear relation. a) ii) a function. b) x (time in 1 hours) 2 3 y (earnings 8 in dollars) 16 24 4 b) Use the table of values to estimate Jamal‛s earnings for 3.5 hours of work.
