September 5, 2007 - Roosevelt Elementary School

September 2, 2014
Dear Parents,
Welcome to 3rd grade! My name is Jody Martz and I am delighted to be your child’s
teacher! This is my 15th year teaching for the Livonia Public Schools. I attended Livonia
Public Schools myself, earned a bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University, and a
master’s degree from Marygrove College. I am very excited about the new school year here
at Roosevelt! Working with children is a fascinating and enjoyable profession. I am eager to
get to know your child and you. My goal is to help your child reach his/her highest potential
– academically, socially, and emotionally in a nurturing environment.
You will find important information in the pages that follow. Look for a list of
recommended school supplies, volunteer information, the types of snacks that are allowed
in the classroom, daily folder procedures, behavior expectations, schedules, and more! If
you have any questions or concerns, please contact me by email
[email protected], sending a note, or leaving a message at (734) 744-2775
extension 70010. Let’s work together to make this a great year!
Sincerely,

Healthy Snacks and Water
We have a snack time every morning because we work hard in school and need to
energize our bodies! Please send a healthy, nut free snack and a container of water for
your child every day. Don’t forget to label the bottle with your child’s name too. Use a
permanent marker directly on the bottle or write your child’s name on a piece of masking
tape then tape it on the bottle. This will help children identify his/her water bottle, which
will prevent spreading germs with other children.
Attached is a list of snack suggestions. Please keep the list to reference to ensure the
snacks are safe for the classroom.
** Chips, donuts, Pop Tarts, Fruit Roll-ups, Fruit Snacks, candy, high sugar
cereal, cookies, and beverages (except water) are not allowed during snack
time.
Behavior Expectations
I have high expectations for each child’s behavior in our classroom and
encourage them to be the best they can be. We do many activities to build
community, be respectful to others/ourselves, and learn to work independently
and cooperatively. The following rules will be encouraged in our classroom:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Listen carefully to Mrs. Martz and classmates.
Follow directions.
Be prepared and responsible.
Respect others, our school, and yourself.
Work and play safely.
Folders
The children will be supplied with 3 folders. One folder will stay in the
children’s desks, one folder is for Writing Workshop, and one is to go home
and come back to school every day. The 3rd graders will have a yellow takehome folder this year. At this time, the yellow take-home folders have not
arrived to Roosevelt yet. We’re expecting them to arrive within a week or so.
To keep you informed of school happenings and your child’s progress, I
suggest you set aside a few minutes every afternoon or early evening, with your
child to check the contents of his/her folder. If your child has an incomplete
assignment, please make sure it is completed for the next day or as indicated.
Have your child put the homework back in the folder and put the folder in
his/her backpack to help your child build responsibility and be prepared for
the next day.
Spelling/Word Study
Word Study will not begin for a couple of weeks. The children will be
given a spelling inventory to determine his/her individual needs during the first
2 weeks of school. More information will follow.
