JUNE 2017 FROM THE PRINCIPAL It is unbelievable that the month of June is already here. How quickly the last term is flying by. This is a month full of many special events including the junior and intermediate City Track & Field days, Kindergarten Outdoor School trip, Grade 3 Westfield Village trip, Green Legacy, Volunteer Breakfast, Grade 8 Ottawa trip and Graduation as well as many class celebrations. We want to congratulate all of our students for their hard work and commitment to be the best they can be, in work and in play! Way to go Renegades! Our final School Council Meeting will be held on June 13th at 6:30pm. It has been a busy year, and the council has accomplished much. I would like to thank our executive, Lynn Clack and Alana Lefebvre and the entire School Council for their dedication and hard work throughout the year. I look forward to all of the June activities and hope that you can join us when and where possible! L. Doering ROCKWOOD CENTENNIAL GARDENS Have you taken a look at our beautiful gardens? Thank you to our parent community for their many, many hours of work to make our gardens look so wonderful. A big thank you to Dufferin Aggregates for the very generous donation of boulders and river rock. Thank you also, to Mr. Collier and Dylan D. who worked very hard at rebuilding our planter by the front door. This is such a wonderful display to the community of working together for the good of all our students! Well done Renegade Families! THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL The last day of school for the 2016-2017 school year is Thursday, June 29th, 2017. Students will be dismissed at our regular time. MOVING IN – MOVING OUT If you are planning on moving during the summer , please let the office know as soon as possible. SPECIAL OLYMPICS On Wednesday, May 17th some of our students participated in Special Olympics at St. James Sports Fields. What an exciting day! Each student competed in three track and field events, with assistance and encouragement from their peer coaches, and everyone won ribbons and medals. We are so very proud of the enthusiasm and sportsmanship displayed by the athletes. All of our athletes lived up to the words in the Special Olympics oath: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” All participants trained with their Peer Coaches. At the meet, they were all fabulous representatives of RCPS, and they had a very successful day of friendly competition and exercise. Congratulations to athletes Keira, Albie, Hannah, Seth, and Cristin. Special thanks go out to our amazing peer coaches, friends and family for their support. Peer Coaches; Emma, Beckham, Bree, Mikayla, Matthew, and Olivia. KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION We will welcome our new Junior Kindergarten who will be starting at our school in September to an orientation on Wednesday, June 14th at 9:00am. If you have not received information about this, please call the school. We will continue to register children for our September 2017 Kindergarten classes. If you have a child who will turn 4 years of age on or before December 31, 2017, please call the school, at 519-856-9556. MEDICATIONS This is a reminder for any parents who have medication for their children currently stored at the school. All medications will be sent home with students on the last day of school. Please watch for them to come home in the backpacks. DRESS FOR THE WEATHER Now that spring is here and the sun is shining, please remember to send your child to school with a hat and sunscreen. Providing your child with a reusable water bottle is also a great idea during these warm days. Also review the dress code with your child to ensure they are following school guidelines and dressing appropriately. For example, please no spaghetti straps, short shorts, low cut tops or muscle shirts. Boy’s baggy pants require a belt. LOST AND FOUND The items from the Lost and Found bin will be displayed until June 16th. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity. As you shop for the new school year, please use a permanent marker and label items that could go missing. Our volunteers have a great success rate for returning labelled items from the lost and found bins to their owners. FROM THE LIBRARY Please make sure that all library books are returned by Friday, June 16th . If your child comes home with an overdue library notice, please do your best to locate and return the book. If you cannot find the book, please pay for the book to clear your child’s library account for next year. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated. There will be a two day BOGO Book Fair for the students to stock up on some summer reading. The Fair will run June 14 and 15 and will be open during nutrition breaks and after school until 4:30 p.m. each day. During the summer heat, don’t forget that the Rockwood Public Library offers an air-conditioned, quiet atmosphere for your family to embrace reading together. OTTAWA TRIP Our Grade 8 students will be visiting our country’s capital June 21st-23rd. Students will be learning the history of Canada as they tour Parliament, visit museums, bike around the canal, shop at the Byward Market, and take in the beautiful scenery of Ottawa. ULTIMATE FRISBEE Mrs. Soper will be taking a group of Intermediate students to the fields at College Heights and Centennial to compete in an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on June 26th. Good luck on your final sporting event this school year, Rockwood Renegades! COLOUR HOUSE Things are heating up outside and so is our Colour House game plan. This month we will enjoy the sunshine and some friendly competition outdoors. We will celebrate Canada Day on June 1st in our Colour House teams. Please ensure that your son or daughter is dressed in red and white and has an extra set of clothes, as there will be a water balloon activity. Some other events that students will get to participate in include; The Great Canadian Beaver Relay, Red and White Balloon Stomp, My Canada in Art, and Minute to Win It Canadian Style. If it happens to rain, we will postpone our celebration to June 2nd. We are all looking forward to our year-end Capture the Flag Tournament on June 28th. Students will compete against other houses to see who can find their flag pieces first and then assemble them to create their flag. This is always a fun activity. Finally, on June 29th , we will end our year with our annual Penny Carnival from 11:05 - 12:45. All donations to the Penny Carnival go directly to our Benevolent Fund.
