The Science behind revision

WHAT IS SPACED LEARNING?
Review
a large amount of content
in a short space of time
Students
time
Break
can only focus for a short
up learning with ‘down time’
HOW TO MAKE STRONG MEMORIES? –
TRY SPACED LEARNING
A
spaced learning lesson
traditionally consists of three
‘inputs’ separated by two 10minute gaps
The
three inputs are usually as
follows: Presentation, recalling,
understanding
Things to try in the 10min break
 Origami
 Play
dough models
 Juggling
 Aerobics
 Group Karaoke
 Balloon games
 Pictionary
Avoid the use of electronic devices
THE SCIENCE BEHIND MEMORY
An
impulse causes chemicals
to diffuse across the synapse
A gene is ‘switched on’
A protein is made that
improves the way the
synapse works
A successful memory is as a
result of lots of proteins on
the synapse
SO WHY DOESN’T CONTINUOUS READING WORK?
Producing
too much of one
type of protein, in one go, can
cause problems
Your
body realises this and
‘switches off’ the gene
After
about 10-15mins of
reading facts or copying notes
you stop making memories
TIME FOR A CHANGE?
1
Hour after reading based revision
with no gaps you have forgotten 50%
1
Day after reading based revision
with no gaps you have forgotten 80%
With
spaced learning you will only
forget 10 % after 1 hour
Repeat
the session the following day
and the most of the memories will last
a week
