How Will Your Student
Pay For School?
The acceptance letter arrived, you found a cheap mini fridge online, and your
teen is ready to take on the campus – and then the world. But how will you pay
for that higher education? Check out our checklist to evaluate your options.
1. Evaluate awards.
Find Us On Facebook
There’s a new way to get the latest
news from your credit union: you
can now find us on Facebook!
We use the UCCU Facebook page to
talk with you about financial
matters, community news, credit
union happenings and current
events. You’ll find everything from
open house invitations to special
deals and smart money tips.
Simply ‘Like’ us on Facebook and
check back regularly to find out
what’s new at UCCU!
Low
interest rates
make this a great time
to purchase or refinance
a home, and UCCU can
help you save money on
your mortgage! We
offer a wide range of
residential loan options,
and we can personalize
a plan that fits your
needs. Visit any of our
seven area locations,
and see how much
you’ll save when you
finance your home with
UCCU!
If your child won an award – like the Missouri Bright Flight Program – be sure
you understand the terms and conditions. This will help you assess the financial situation and determine if your family requires any additional funding
and, if so, how much.
2. Apply for scholarships before loans.
There are literally millions of scholarship options (including UCCU scholarships!), and your student is bound to qualify for a few. Visit www.fastweb.com
to review a comprehensive list, along with deadline information.
3. Determine how much more you need.
Add up all scholarships, grants, awards and family contributions – as well as
savings earmarked for college – then determine whether a student or personal loan is needed. Remember, UCCU offers low-cost loans for things like
computers, supplies, furniture and even that trusty car your teen will need to
get back and forth from school to home.
The earlier you evaluate your student’s collegiate costs and payment methods, the better. Contact the credit union if you need financial help, and check
out our scholarship information below.
UCCU Offers Scholarships!
This year, the credit union will
award two $1,500 scholarships to

www.uccumo.com or stop by one
of our seven locations to review
complete scholarship guidelines.

Tax Time Is Here!
Nobody looks forward to tax time – managing a
year’s worth of receipts and payments is always a bit
daunting – but UCCU has some tips to make the
task a little easier. You could save more money this
year or the next by reducing Uncle Sam’s share of
your income. Check it out:
1.) Make A Contribution
You can still lower your 2013 tax liability with
an IRA contribution. Open a qualifying UCCU
IRA, and funds you invest through April 15
can help you build future security while also
lowering your tax bill. Keep up the contributions year-round to save more money every
year!
2.) Track ose Deductions
Medical bills, state and local taxes, mortgage
payments or property taxes are all applied
to the tax year in which they were paid.
E-Statement users have an advantage here –
your CU Anywhere account will have all of your
financial statements, which makes tracking
your deductions easy!
3.) Be Charitable
You can donate cash, property, clothing,
household items, vehicles and even stocks to
get a tax break and help a worthy cause at
the same time. Just be sure to get a written
receipt!
4.) Give More
Did you know you can reduce your 2014 tax
liability even further by giving money away?
Give up to $12,000 per recipient and pay no
gift tax. Eligible gifts include paying for
someone’s education, covering medical bills for
others, or gifting appreciated stocks.
Of course, everyone's financial circumstances and
needs are unique, so it's a good idea to carefully
consider your choices and consult an experienced
professional when appropriate. And, if you need
help finding the right accounts to fit your tax needs
for this year, contact UCCU.
