Bus Behavior Interventions

Bus Behavior Interventions
1. Establish rules for appropriate bus behavior
o Bus wide behavior expectations- communicated to all students
2. Explicitly explain behavior expectations to student (i.e. sit in seat, sit quietly, do not touch
other students)/model/allow student to practice
3. Reinforce the student for demonstrating appropriate bus behaviors
4. Have the student question any directions, explanations, instructions, he/she does not
understand
5. Have the bus driver restate/reiterate rules often and reinforce the student for following the
rules
6. Ride the bus with the student in order to teach appropriate behavior/model appropriate
behaviors and allow the student to practice appropriate behaviors with you
7. Speak to the student to explicitly explain what specifically he/she is doing is wrong (i.e. fighting
on the bus, standing out of seat, etc.)
8. Post bus behavior rules where students can see them while riding the bus
9. Assign a peer to accompany the student to monitor/encourage appropriate behavior
10. Communicate with parents
o Parents could reinforce the student at home for appropriate bus behavior
11. Implement a seating chart for the bus- seat the student near the driver
12. Reinforce the student for demonstrating appropriate behavior (i.e. praise, acknowledgement
from bus driver, given special job on bus like bud driver’s assistant, etc.)
