When did it appear?
Goalball was invented in 1946 by
Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German
Sepp Reindle. This new sport was
part of a rehabilitation program for
disabled veterans of the 2nd World
War in order to develop their ability
to concentrate. In 1976, goalball
became part of the official calendar
(Canada, woman ) and 1984
(USA,women).
What is goalball?
Is a sport for the blind and
visually impaired. This is a
game involving two teams
of three players each, with
a maximum of three
substitutions for team. It is
played on the floor of a
gymnasium with in a
rectangular court divided
into two halves by a center
line and with a goal at
each end. For the game
you use a ball with a
bell. The game itself is that
each team must score
goals by throwing the ball
into a goal while the other
team tries to stop it.
The Court
The court is a rectangle of
18m long and 9m wide. It
is divided into 6 areas.
The court lines are marked
in relief to be recognized
by touch and to help
players to navigate. The
side lines are marked at
1.5 m from the goalkeeper
and the lines that delimit
the area of the team are at
4.5 m on the side of the
field.
Specific Material:
-Goal: From 9 meters wide
and 1.30 meters in height.
-Orientation lines: From a
width of 5 cm, with a string of
three millimeters below to get
a rough texture, which serves
the players as a means of
orientation.
-Ball: you play with a ball
that has bells inside. Sense is
used to detect the trajectory
of the ball in play. You must
have great ability to find
space to be located on the
court.
-Patches: All players wear
opaque masks to match the
profile of all participants.
Duration and Offenses
Duration:
The game lasts 20 minutes and is divided
into two halves of 10 minutes each. The
half-time will be 5 minutes. Paraolympic
Games and world championships will have
a half-time of 15 minutes.
Offenses:
- If the player throws the ball before the
referee has given permission.
- If a player throws the ball twice.
- If a defender touches the ball outside his
area of team.
Proposals for using goalball in
Primary School:
-That students
know the sports.
-That students to
promote the
senses of touch,
hearing and
orientation.
-That students
make the practice
to see the feelings.
