This week, we talked about knowing ourselves as readers when we choose new books to read. Students explored many different kinds of books to help them find favorite authors and series. Next week we will talk about the two main genres, fiction and nonfiction. Students will also be selecting books for their book boxes independently that are just right for them. Writing We began our writers’ workshop this week. Students are beginning to tell stories about their memories called personal narratives. Students did a prewrite by sketching the beginning, middle and end of the story they wanted to tell before drafting and writing words to tell what happened. Phonics In phonics this week, we reviewed short a and e vowel sounds. We made words and found words that rhyme with these two vowel sounds. Please review all the short vowel sounds at home. We will be reviewing the short i and o next week. Apple – a Elephant – e Igloo – i Octopus – o Umbrella – u Science This week we started our science unit on New Plants. Our focus word in science this week was observe. Students learned that observe means to look carefully. Scientists observe all the time. Students took an observation walk with their observation “cameras” around campus to look carefully at the plants at our school. Then, we came back to write about what we observed in our science notebooks. Students also labeled their science calendars and planted a Brassica seed. Math Students continued to practice finding the whole when given two parts. We also practiced writing number sentences to match addition story problems. We completed our first math topic this week by taking the first end of topic test on Friday. Look for a copy of the first topic test to come home with your child next week. This week, they were challenged to find a missing part when given one part and the whole. For example, 6 + __ = 9. Please practice this skill at home, it is very challenging for students.
