Section 2
Reading activity
1
In response to Mr. Jones
2
Mr. Jones complained in last week’s
3
Guardian that women are taking all the jobs.
4
What utter nonsense! I would like to reply by stating that women from ethnic groups are
5
under-represented in all occupation sectors. Is Mr. Jones aware that the Gender Equality
6
Duty is now a legal requirement? Public organisations now need a written charter (a rule
7
book) showing how men and women are treated equally.
8
Does Mr. Jones not realise that women and men have long been subjected to
9
stereotypes and beliefs about their different abilities and roles? Culture, family and
10
education have reinforced those stereotypes. What about Nature V Nurture? I would like
11
him to answer if he thinks men and women are born different? Does society make them
12
different? Does religion make them different? Can he define femininity? Can he define
13
masculinity? I doubt if Mr. Jones can even spell ‘define’.
14
Let me explain Mr. Jones, that during the twentieth century, women in Britain have had to
15
fight for equal rights, fight for education, fight for the right to vote and fight for the right to
16
work in jobs usually reserved for men. Recent research shows that men in business
17
categorise women into five groups:
18

Babes (young and attractive)
19

Mums (unattractive)
20

Lesbians (feminists who don’t like men)
21

Dragons (old or unattractive)
22

One-of-the-boys (women who behave like men - only they are promoted)
23
Perhaps Mr. Jones works for one of these businesses. Finally, I have a riddle for Mr.
24
Jones. A mother and her son are in a car accident. They are rushed into the hospital. A
25
nurse on duty sees the mother and son and cries out: “What happened to my son?”
26
Can Mr. Jones tell me who the nurse is?
27
Yours, very annoyed, Tony Smith
