Dear Parent(s),
Your child has been nominated to be part of the 2015 Sonoma County Science Olympiad Team.
This is a rigorous but fun academic event sponsored by the Sonoma County Office of Education
and requires that students demonstrate a passion for science. Students must also be positive role
models, have excellent attendance, and be up-to-date on their school-work.
School teams consist of from 12 to 15 students in grades 4-6. The students compete in 14 events,
sometimes as teams of 2-5 students. The events are quite diverse, ranging from tossing paper
airplanes for accuracy to identifying animals by their tracks to doing mathematical calculations
and performing experiments.

The team will meet for practices on the following days/dates/times: ___________ Participation

The Science Olympiad competition will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Students will need
to be at Lawrence Jones Middle School, in Rohnert Park, from 8:15 until around 3:00. You will
need to arrange transportation (there won’t be a school bus.).
We realize that the competition is several months away, however we need to form our school
team now, so please consider your child’s participation. Will there be possible conflicts for the
practice sessions and the actual event with sports such as soccer or little league, family
gatherings, church, or other events? If so, it would not be fair for your son or daughter to take a
spot on the Science Olympiad team, as that would deprive another student the opportunity to
participate. When a student signs up for the school team, there is an expectation of commitment
to the team, to the practice dates, and to the Olympiad event.
If you would like your child to be a part of our school’s team, and can provide or arrange for
transportation, please return the required permission slip by ______. Please note that you only
sign and return the media opt-out form if you do NOT give the Sonoma County Office of
Education media use permission for your child. You do not need to sign or return the media
opt-out form if you DO give the Sonoma County Office of Education media use permission for
your child.
Additionally, we need parents to help on the day of the Science Olympiad. Parents are needed to
supervise events and to supervise activities in an “Activity Room.” Please let me know if you are
willing to help out.
