Job Description
Position Title:
Volunteer Coach. May also be referred to as Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Team Manager, Ride
Leader or Team Volunteer.
Description
Mentor/coach student-riders in grades 7-8 (middle school) or grades 9-12 (high school).
To provide an enjoyable and safe cross country mountain bike experience for an assigned group of
student-riders while they learn mountain bike skills, explore trails, gain fitness, teamwork, goalsetting, leadership and stewardship.
Responsibilities:
1. Teach student-riders the fundamentals of the sport emphasizing skill development, safety,
teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun.
2. Mentor/coach those student-riders that wish to work on competitive and non-competitive
goals.
3. Preside over team activities including all scheduled team practices, trail rides, and races.
4. Ensure inclusivity of all student-riders and equal mentorship for all student-riders regardless
of skills, fitness, cycling experience or economic status.
5. Work to establish and improve team unity and spirit.
6. Adhere to Washington Student League policies, objectives and rules.
7. Adhere to IMBA Rules of the Trail etiquette standards.

Evaluation:
Minimum 21 years of age to be a Level 1 or 2 coach. 18 years of age and out of high school
to be a level 3 or 4 coach.
Complete and pass background check every 2 years. Background check cost is $12.
Must register annually with the Washington Student League. Annual registration is $30 and
includes annual membership to Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance.
Must have the desire to work with youth and exude enthusiasm and positive spirit with a
commitment to equal participation. Exhibit patience, maturity and dependability. Recognized
by others of sound character and strong moral values and personal ethics.
Maintain Washington Student League coaching license requirements.
An annual two-way review of how things are going and how they can be improved is encouraged. As
a League, we want to hear how we can make your volunteer experience a good one for the benefit
of the student-riders and for you. We want to make sure that you are meeting all of your team and
coaching goals.
An annual coach review may be performed via anonymous survey with student-riders, parents, and
other coaches.
Time Commitment:
The Spring League program runs from December 1 until June 15. However, most teams do not start
team activities until January and typically and conclude by the end of May. Time commitment
depends on your team structure and how often you choose to hold practices and team rides and
whether or not your team participates in the league races or fundraisers for your team. Most teams
typically meet twice per week; once after school (90 minutes) and once on the weekend for a trail
ride (2 hours). As a coach you have the flexibility to develop the program best for your team.

coaches are the best role models. The future of mountain biking and stewardship falls on today’s
youth. As coaches, you will educate and empower our student-riders to be ambassadors of this
great sport and help them to discover a life-long passion of cycling.
The Washington Student League takes the safety of our student-riders very seriously. This is why
we require all coaches to have a background check. Additionally, we have strict coach to studentrider ratios. We appreciate your understanding and support of protecting our youth and expect all
coaches to fulfill their role and meet league requirements and responsibilities) to ensure the safety of
our riders.
