Why are we here?
• 50% of Americans have left a job to ‘get away from their manager at
some point in their career’
(Gallup, 2015)
•
The Manager accounts for at least 70% of the variance in employee
engagement
(Gallup, 2015)
•
Lack of future opportunities was the #1 reason why people quit their job.
(CEB, 2016)
• 2 of the top 5 reasons people choose to work for a company related to
growth and development
(Deloitte, 2016)
• All generations want more communication from their Leaders
Key challenges for new leaders in the
proposals sector
Lead yourself first
Clarity and accountability
Support team development
Interpersonal skills
Improve overall team performance and maturity
Theme 1
SELF LEADERSHIP
ETHICS & INTEGRITY
Lead yourself first
Visualisation – use your I-magi-nation
Visualise someone you believe is a leader. It could be someone you work with now or someone you have worked with before. It
could be someone you’ve seen in the media or read about. Go with the one that inspires you the most.
I’d now like you to build a more complete picture about this person. How do they look? How do they behave? What makes them
so truly awesome you can’t take your eyes off them? How do they inspire you and make you believe they are a leader? Think
about the way they talk to other people, the way they solve problems and how they handle stress or pressure.
Now, open your eyes and write down the things that helped define this leader for you – use single words that capture their
essence. I’ll give you a couple of minutes (start timer).
Now I want you to think about yourself. Take a sheet of paper and use the next 3 minutes to write down your leadership qualities.
What is it about you that makes you a great leader? Use single words or a couple of words to describe the essence of what you
mean. (start timer)
Lead yourself first
Compare your lists and choose the 2 most meaningful leadership qualities from your list that you haven’t yet mastered and write
them on the GREEN leaves provided.
Take a moment to consider a leadership attribute you feel really need let go of and write this on the ORANGE or YELLOW leaf
provided.
There are 2 leadership trees throughout the room. At some point during our group work, take the time to place your green leaves
around the branches of our trees and your other leaves between the branches and the ground.
Record your answers somewhere as well. The yellow leaves are your homework for this year. You should find a way to develop
these qualities. Now before we finish, I want you to spend a further couple of minutes thinking about these questions:
•
•
How will you develop this quality?
How will it help your team?

Your core values
Task:
Put a star next to all the values that are important to you, including any that you added.
These are your ‘personal values’.
Now, narrow your personal values to five. Cross of the least important values and circle the most
important. Values are not being tossed away, we are working through the list to find your core values.
Narrow your list to three values.
Now choose two.
These are your core values – the rules that you live by. Your homework is to consider how these
values show up in your work? How do they impact your team, and how do they influence how you
work with other people?

DEVELOP YOUR
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Develop empathy through listening
Task:
•
•
•
In your group, find a partner or work as a group of 3 if there are any participants
without a partner.
For 3 minutes, brainstorm the following topic as a group by sharing your ideas:
– What obstacles prevent Proposal Team Managers from having good
communication with their team of proposal managers, coordinators
designers, etc?
At the conclusion of 3 minutes, end the discussion.
Develop empathy through listening
Task:
•
•
For the next 5 minutes, discuss the next topic with the following rules:
1. The first person speaks for 30 seconds about the topic
2. The next person restates what the first person says and continues the discussion
for a further 30 seconds
3. The first person restates what the previous person said and continues the
discussion.
Topic: What enables Proposal Team Managers to have good communication
with their team?
What do you notice? What was different about these two ways of communicating?
How did you feel when you were restating the other person’s position?
What will you change about your own communication style?

Support Team Development

Members of a proposal team have been placed on an interactive APMP Certification Pathway.
Find a partner (or work in small groups of 3-4) and select a team member from the pathway and
their individual profile information. Tip: Each person should review 1 data set and contribute their
findings to the discussion.
Answer these questions about your selected team member on the sheet provided:
1.
2.
3.
What is the next level of certification they can achieve with APMP (or the next level of professional
recognition)
Based on the summary of their competency assessment (see attachment), write 2 specific development
activities you would set to improve their use of best practices. Use the SMART model (specific,
measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound to develop meaningful objectives.
How will you support your team-member to achieve their objectives (be specific). What will you do? How will
you show up?
