PawSox Game Notes - Minor League Baseball

JULY 19th
LEHIGH VALLEY (56-40) at PAWTUCKET (53-43)
7:05 pm
Lehigh Valley IronPigs RHP Brian Bass (4-7, 4.09) vs. Pawtucket Red Sox LHP Felix Doubront (1-3, 3.38)
Getting Closer – The Pawtucket Red Sox and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs play game two of their 4-game series tonight at 7:05 pm
at McCoy Stadium. Last night the PawSox got off to a great start in this key stretch which has these two teams (the top two clubs
in the IL North division) facing each other 8 times over 12 days with a 4-1 victory in the series-opener. That victory pulled the
PawSox to within 3-games of the front-running IronPigs. A win tonight would put the Sox just -2 GB which would mark the
closest they have been to 1st-place since May 12 (-1½ GB).
Playoff Preview? - When these two rivals conclude a 4-game set in Lehigh Valley one week from Friday (July 29), they each will
know a little more if they are on course to meet in the Governors’ Cup semi-finals – either right here at McCoy Stadium or in
Allentown, PA - for Game 1 on September 7 at 7:05 pm. The IL wild card winner hosts the IL North champion for Games 1 & 2
of the playoffs before the North champ is home for Games 3-5 (Sept. 9-11).
This Series - The PawSox, who were the IL wild card leader until Sunday, presently trial Durham by a ½-game in the wild card
race. The Sox are hosting division-leading Lehigh Valley this week at McCoy. The clubs – separated by 3-games in the IL North
– will also play tomorrow afternoon at 12:05 pm and Thursday night at 7:05 pm. Next week the scene will shift to Allentown, PA
when they teams face each other again for another 4-game set at Lehigh Valley next Tuesday – Friday. The PawSox have 47
games remaining in the regular-season while the Pigs have 48 left.
Division Numbers Add Up – One of the key factors that has the PawSox in contention for the IL North pennant is their terrific
play within the division. Pawtucket is 31-18 vs. their IL North rivals (the best mark in the North and among the best in the
league). The PawSox are 17-8 at home vs. Northern foes and have at least a .500 record or better against each of the other five
North division clubs. The Sox are 5-5 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but 6-2 vs. Buffalo, 6-3 vs. Lehigh Valley, 8-4 vs. Rochester,
and 6-4 vs. Syracuse.
Streak Busted – The PawSox - who had their 5-game winning streak snapped Saturday night – lost two in a row over the
weekend but got back on the winning streak with their 4-1 victory over Lehigh Valley last night. Thus the Sox have still not
dropped back-to-back games in more than two weeks since they were swept in a doubleheader at home by Scranton/WB on July
2nd. The PawSox have not lost 3 in a row since they opened July with three straight defeats (July 1-2). The Sox had matched
their season-high with five wins in a row from July 8-15 before the loss Saturday night. Pawtucket has had two other 5-game
winning streaks (from April 15-19 and May 31 – June 4).
This Homestand – Dating back to their two wins over Buffalo here at McCoy just over a week ago before the break (2-0 and 4-3
on July 9 & 10) along with a 4-game split with Durham this past weekend, and their win over Lehigh Valley last night the
PawSox are either 5-2 on a 10-game homestand or 3-2 on an 8-game homestand (depending on your point of view). This
homestand concludes on Thursday night. Beginning this past Thursday, 16 of 24 PawSox games will be played here at McCoy
from July 14 – August 7.
Soxcess – The PawSox have won 21 of their last 32 games over the past month+. Pawtucket reached a season-high 11-games
over .500 on Friday (52-41). It was the highest they have gone above .500 since the end of the 2008 season (85-58). They can
return to that level with a victory tonight.
What Have You Done for Me Lately – The PawSox have won 6 of 8 and 10 of their last 14 games. Over a longer stretch, the
PawSox have won 15 of their last 21 games and they are 21-11 since June 16. In a month+ span the Sox have gone from 3rd-place
and -7½ GB to 2nd-place and -3 GB.
Division Standings – Pawtucket has been alone in 2nd-place in the IL North since July 10 as they now trail 1 st-place Lehigh
Valley by 3-games. The Sox had moved to within just 2½-games on June 30 equaling the closest they had been since May 15
(also -2½ GB). The Sox were a season-high -8½ GB in the IL North on June 14. Pawtucket had crept to within a ½-game from
May 8-10. The Sox have spent one day alone in 1st-place this season (April 19). They have been tied for 1st (most recently on
April 22). Scranton/WB has won the IL North pennant the past five years in a row (2006-2010).
Wild Ride – Pawtucket has trailed IL Wild Card leader Durham by a ½-game for the past two days after owning the wild card
spot themselves from Thursday - Saturday. Right now, Durham leads by a ½-game over the PawSox (although the Bulls are also
only a ½-game behind IL South-leading Gwinnett), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is 3½-games behind while Louisville (-4 GB),
Indianapolis (-5 GB), and Charlotte (-6 GB) are right in the thick of an extremely tight wild card race. The last time the PawSox
were the IL wild card came during the 2008 season.
Home Is Where the Heart Is – The PawSox have won 6 of 8 at McCoy and 12 of their last 18 home games. Since June 28, the
PawSox are in a stretch of playing 17 of 23 games at McCoy Stadium from June 28 through July 21 (13-7 thus far). The home
stretch was interrupted only by their 6-game roadtrip to upstate New York vs. Rochester and Syracuse from July 4-8 (4-2 in
those). After tonight, Pawtucket will have 22 home games remaining (21 at McCoy and 1 at Fenway Park – on August 20).
Just Win Baby – As mentioned, the PawSox have won 21 of their last 32 games since June 16. Prior to that, the Sox had lost 7 of
9 games from June 5-14. Their longest winning streak of the season is 5-games (done three times) from April 15-19, May 31–
June 4, and from July 8-15. Their longest losing streak of the year is 5-games from May 10-14 (all at home).
Four Score Helps – Through June 22 the Sox had scored 3 runs or less in more than half their games (36 of their first 71 games
through June 22). Since then, however, the PawSox have scored 4 runs or more in 16 of their last 25 games going 16-9 in those.
Pawtucket is now 42-9 when they score more than 3 runs in a game this season. Conversely they are 11-34 when they score 3
runs or less in a game.
A Winning July – Pawtucket is 10-7 in July despite hitting only .238 (124-for-521) while pitchers have a 5.10 ERA (81 ER in
143 IP). The Sox have also been out-scored 83-62 this month but they have managed to win 10 of 17 thus far. The PawSox are
slated to play 30 games in 31 days in July.
June Comes Up a Winner – The Sox finished 17-11 in June - the 17 wins equaling their most from any month all of last year (1713 in August of 2010). The Sox have posted two winning months in three tries this season (going 13-10 in April but 13-15 in
May). Sox pitchers were 17-11 with a 3.12 ERA in June while Sox batters hit .257 with 24 HR. The PawSox out-scored their
opponents, 140-99 in June.
Home Improvement - The PawSox are 26-23 at home this season. They were 4-games above .500 at McCoy on Friday for the
first time since April 21 (6-2) – matching their season-high. They have not been 5-games over at home since last August 6 (3126). On May 30 the Sox had dipped to a season-high 4-games under .500 at McCoy (10-14). Pawtucket has won 12 of their last
18 home games.
Road Runners – Pawtucket has won 5 of their last 7 away games. They have again reached a season-high of 7-games over .500
on the road (27-20) - also on July 6 – as their current road record is 5th best in the league.
Home/Road Comparison – On the season the Sox are 26-23 with a 3.48 ERA at home (175 ER in 4453 IP). Pawtucket is batting
.255 in 49 games at McCoy (419-for-1643) with 52 HR. On the road the Sox are 27-20 with a 3.73 ERA (166 ER in 400.2 IP)
while hitting .248 in 47 games (394-for-1586) with 39 HR.
One Step Forward…Two Steps Forward – Pawtucket has won their last five 1-run games to improve their record to 16-11 in 1run games which is 3rd best in the league. The Sox have also won their last four 2-run games to up their record to 6-9 in 2-run
games this season after losing 9 of their first 11 2-run affairs this season. The PawSox are 10-9 in 3-run games. And the Sox are
21-14 in games decided by 4 runs or more (3 rd best mark in the IL).
Series Situation – Pawtucket – up 1-0 in this 4-game set vs. Lehigh Valley - split their last series (vs. Durham) after winning each
of their prior three series (in Rochester & Syracuse and home vs. Buffalo). The PawSox are 13-8-6 in their 27 series played this
season. Starting with that 4-game set vs. Durham from July 14-17, the PawSox are playing 10 consecutive 4-game series that will
finally end with a 2-game set in Syracuse on August 24 & 25.
The Agony of Defeat…The Thrill of Victory – The PawSox have lost 10 games in the opponent’s last at-bat this season. On the
other hand, the Sox have won 7 games during their last at-bat (4 of them in walk-off fashion at McCoy). Pawtucket has 21 comefrom-behind victories this season.
Bonus Baseball – Pawtucket is 5-6 in extra-inning games – T3rd most played in the IL this season (Norfolk leads with 14 OT
games followed by Durham with 13 extra-inning affiars). Pawtucket, Columbus, and Louisville all have 11. The Sox have
already played more extra-inning games this season (11) than all of last year (6-3).
April/May in the Books – The Sox finished 13-15 in the month of May as Pawtucket batters hit .250 during the month with 29
HR in 28 games. Sox pitchers were 13-15 with a 3.50 ERA in May. The PawSox went 13-10 this April as Sox batters hit .257
while the Sox pitching staff posted a 3.25 ERA in April.
Come Homers – Pawtucket has 24 HR in their last 21 games. The Sox are 5 th in the International League in HR with 91
(Louisville leads with 101). Pawtucket has homered in 51 games this season and they are 37-14 in those.
Twin Killings – Pawtucket’s defense leads the IL with 105 double plays – 7 more than the next closest clubs (Lehigh Valley &
Norfolk with 98 DP’s). Overall the PawSox defense is 4 th in the league with a .981 fielding pct. (67 errors in 3548 total chances).
Other League Rankings – Pawtucket is 3rd in the IL in runs scored (445) despite a team batting average that is 12 th at .252. They
have not dipped under .250 since May 22 when they were hitting .249. Sox batters are 2 nd in the IL with 361 walks. As a result,
Pawtucket’s on-base pct. of .333 is 4th best in the league. PawSox pitchers are 2nd in the IL with a 3.60 ERA (although it was 3.63
on Sunday which was their highest since after the third game of the season when they were at 3.67 on April 9). The Sox are one
behind Gwinnett for the fewest hits allowed in the league (755). The Braves lead the IL with a 3.08 ERA.
Against Lehigh Valley This Season – The PawSox lead the season-series over Lehigh Valley by a 6-3 margin (going 4-1 here at
McCoy and 2-2 at Lehigh Valley). The Sox and IronPigs split a 4-game series in Allentown, PA at the end of April. The clubs
swapped decisive victories during the first two games of the set (Sox won 7-2 on April 26 before Pigs evened matters with an 8-2
win the next night). Pawtucket grabbed the upper hand with an 11-8 win in game three but Lehigh Valley blanked the PawSox in
the finale on April 29, 3-0. The Sox took 3 of 4 from the IronPigs one month ago (June 16-19). Pawtucket won the first three
games of that series - 6-5 in 10-innings, 8-3, and 8-1 but they could not complete the 4-game sweep as Lehigh Valley blanked the
PawSox, 2-0 in the finale on June 19. The Sox got the jump in this 4-game set with a 4-1 win last night.
Stats vs. Lehigh Valley This Season – Pawtucket batters are hitting .264 in the 9 games vs. Lehigh Valley this season (81-for307) with 13 HR while PawSox pitchers are 6-3 with a 2.93 ERA vs. the IronPigs (26 ER in 80 IP). Pawtucket has out-scored
Lehigh Valley, 46-33 in the season-series thus far.
Against Lehigh Valley Last Season - The PawSox finished 6-10 vs. Lehigh Valley last season – their worst record against any IL
North rival as the 10 losses were the most defeats they suffered against any opponent last year. The Sox finished 2-5 at CocaCola Park in Allentown, PA but officially with a 2-6 away record vs. the Pigs as Game 1 of a doubleheader on August 18 at
McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket was technically a “road” game for the PawSox since it was a make-up of a previous rainout in
Allentown. Thus the official home record shows that the PawSox were 4-4 vs. the IronPigs in Pawtucket.
Stats vs. Lehigh Last Year - The Sox hit only .230 vs. Lehigh Valley last season with 8 HR and 55 runs scored (just 3 runs per
game) while the IronPigs hit .272 with 13 HR and 86 runs scored. Sox pitchers were 6-10 with a 5.40 ERA while the Pigs went
10-6 with a 3.28 ERA.
Pigs Eye – Despite losing the season-series last year the PawSox still managed to finish 8-games ahead of the IronPigs in the IL
North standings as the clubs finished the 2010 season in 4th-place and 5th-place respectively.
A Different Looking Pig – Lehigh Valley has gone 10-6 vs. the PawSox each of the last two years - winning 10 times as many
games against the PawSox in both 2009 and 2010 (10) as they did in all of 2008 (1-15) – their first year in the International
League. The PawSox have still beaten Lehigh Valley (the fourth-year affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) 33 times in 57
meetings all-time (going 15-1 during the 2008 season in the inaugural year of the IronPigs, 6-10 in 2009, 6-10 last season as well,
and 6-3 thus far in 2011). The PawSox won the first nine games (ever) vs. Lehigh Valley in 2008 before losing on July 5, 2008 at
McCoy, 5-2. That was their only loss that year vs. the IronPigs as the Sox finished 15-1 vs. Lehigh Valley – their most victories
in a single-season against any single IL club ever.
Northern Exposure – The PawSox – who are 31-18 vs. the IL North this season (the best mark within the division) - finished last
year with a 40-40 record against their five IL North division rivals (the only IL North club they had a winning record against was
Rochester at 11-5). Pawtucket was 8-8 vs. both Buffalo and Syracuse but they had losing marks vs. Scranton/WB (7-9) and
Lehigh Valley (6-10).
BOSTON RED SOX DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM –
Portland (37-57) – The Portland Sea Dogs (AA) beat Binghamton, 7-4 last night. 3B Will Middlebrooks had 2 hits & 4 RBI
including a 2-run HR (#11. He’s hitting .314 on the season. Alex Wilson started – 5.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 6 SO. The win went to Cesar
Cabral (2-4) in relief – 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R while Blake Maxwell got the final out for SV #9.
Salem (10-14)/(41-52) – The Salem Red Sox (A) fell to Frederick, 6-2 last night. Bryce Brent and Alex Valdez had RBI singles
to account for the Salem scoring. Stolmy Pimentel’s struggles continued as he dropped to 0-2 with Salem (after going 0-9 for
Portland to begin the year) – 2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER. Pete Ruiz did a nice job in long relief – 4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 7 SO.
Greenville (12-13)/(50-45) – The Greenville Drive (A) lost to Rome, 7-3 last night. Brandon Workman (2-5) suffered the defeat
– 5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 4 ER. Brandon Jacobs contributed 2 hits and 2 RBI.
Lowell (13-17) – The Lowell Spinners (short-A) beat back Brooklyn, 11-5 last night. LF Seth Schwindenhammer had 3 hits good
for 5 RBI as he smashed a 3-run HR in the 2nd-inning and a 2-run shot in the 4th-inning (giving him 6 HR in 25 games with the
Spinners. Garin Cecchini had a double and a 3-run HR (#3). Luis Diaz (3-1) was the starter and winner – 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R.

PAWSOX PLAYER MOVES – None today (as of 3:00 pm). Not including today, the PawSox have gone just 13 days since
May 28 (and that includes the All-Star break) – without making a roster move. The Sox are one under the roster limit with 23
active players.
Pawtucket will soon add INF/OF Drew Sutton who was optioned from Boston last night (when the Red Sox recalled OF Carl
Crawford from his injury rehab assignment with the PawSox). Sutton was recalled to Boston for the second time this season on
June 17 (Lowrie on DL). Overall in 26 games with the Red Sox this season he hit .298 with 7 2B and 7 RBI while playing all
four infield positions and left field. In 39 games with the PawSox this season he is hitting .301 (44-for-146) with 13 2B, 1 3B, 5
HR, and 27 RBI.
Pawtucket has three players currently on the disabled list – INF Jose Iglesias (DL on July 4 – mild concussion), OF J.C. Linares
(DL on May 3 – ankle), and OF Ryan Kalish (DL on April 22 - shoulder).
Carl Crawford became the 51st different player used by the PawSox this season – 25 position players and 26 pitchers. Last year
the PawSox employed 64 different players (37 position players and 27 pitchers). The franchise-record is 70 different players set
in both 1995 and 2006.
14 different PawSox players have been promoted to Boston this season (not including RHP Matt Albers, RHP Dan Wheeler, RHP
Bobby Jenks, RHP John Lackey, INF Marco Scutaro, OF Darnell McDonald, and LHP Franklin Morales who were all on rehab
before being recalled to Boston). The lucky list so far: RHP Alfredo Aceves (twice), LHP Hideki Okajima, RHP Scott Atchison
(four times), LHP Rich Hill, SS Jose Iglesias, RHP Michael Bowden (three times), INF Drew Sutton (twice), OF Josh Reddick
(twice), LHP Tommy Hottovy, C Luis Exposito, LHP Andrew Miller, INF/OF Yamaico Navarro, RHP Kyle Weiland, and LHP
Randy Williams.
