Common Core Connection
Why is it important to have Common
Core State Standards in English
Language Arts and Mathematics?
Common Core State Standards are
benchmarked to international
standards to guarantee Florida
prepares our students to learn and
achieve in and outside of the
classroom. Our students will have to
compete in a global marketplace
against students from China,
Singapore and the United Kingdom.
And with Common Core State
Standards, we can prepare them to
thrive.
Most of the top jobs in America
today did not even exist a decade
ago. These new standards will help
maintain America’s competitive
edge, and ensure all our students
are prepared with the skills and
knowledge to compete with their
peers at home and abroad.
Greetings Parents/Guardians,
Happy November! This month many events are planned for our students
including several academic field trips as well as school closings due to the
holidays. Be sure to check your child’s planner, see the marquee, and/or our
new website at http://hsg.duvalschools.org for more information.
In addition, our habit of the month is “think win-win,” which means coming up
with a solution that will benefit all. Our students will have many chances to
practice “habit 4: think win-win” and show off this habit inside and outside of
the classroom, in the community, as well as at home. One way students can
think win-win in the community is by participating in the Salvation Army Food
Drive at our school. Students can simply bring a canned good and/or one nonperishable item for the food drive. What a wonderful way to support the
community!
On another note, just a reminder that school starts at 8:25 am and ends at 3 pm.
Ensure that your child(ren) arrive on time for school, between 8:00 - 8:25 and is
picked up by 3:00 pm. If this is not feasible before and after school care is an
option for Kindergarten – 5th grade students for a minimal fee. For more
information about Extended Day, call 720-1640.
As always, thank you for entrusting Hogan with your child as we “prepare
students for LIFE” – to Lead, Inspire, Focus, and Excel!

Stone Soup
By Marcia Brown
Not pictured:
Three soldiers came marching down the
road towards a French village. The
peasants seeing them coming, suddenly
became very busy, for soldiers are often
hungry. So all the food was hidden under
mattresses or in barns. There followed a
battle of wits, with the soldiers equal to
the occasion. Stone soup? Why, of
course, they could make a wonderful
soup of stones...but, of course, one must
add a carrot or two...some meat...so it
went.
CLIP AND SAVE
Classes will compete to see who
can bring in the most Box Tops,
Campbell’s Soup Labels, and Coke

What’s Going On in Our Classrooms?
GRASP 3rd grade Math: Multiplication facts. They’ve done several
activities to practice facts including bingo, card games, and reflex math
on the computer. In science, they are discussing various forms of
energy making roller coasters with rulers and marbles to see how
energy changes.
GRASP 4th grade Math: Multiplying using larger numbers and word
problems. They have relay races outside where the kids had to race to
various checkpoints and solve problems. In Science, they are working
on matter and different changes matter can go through.
Physical Education has been
working on “Leader in Me”
concepts all month. In
November, they are starting a
Basketball unit.
First Grade is learning that gravity is a force that pulls things toward Earth. They are making connections
to the real world by observing the effects that gravity has on us and things around them. In math, they
will be solving problems with 3 addends, missing addends, and applying inverse relationships. In Writing,
they are practicing Procedural / Informational writing. In reading they are retelling stories, including the
essential elements such as characters, settings, and problems and solution.
