Preamble
The Robinson Players have formed in order to provide the Bates community with a
theatrical outlet in addition to the academic venue.

The name of this organization shall be The Robinson Players, in honor of Professor
Grosvenor May Robinson (1867-1953), teacher of theater and individualist.
Article II: PU6¥0se .
The pUIpose 0 The Robinson Players is to encourage, produce, and promote student
theater mdependent of or in conjunction with the Department of Theater, as well as to
enhance the community by exposure to experimentaI, professional, and other forms of
theater arts.
Article III: Membership
This organization shall be open to all members of the Bates community. Voting
membership is achieved by participating in a production managed by the Robinson
Players, by attending the first general meeting ofthe academic year, or by attending any
three other general meetings over the course of the academic year.
Article IV: Officers
There shall be an Executive Board comprised of: one Executive Director, one Treasurer,
one Secretary, one Artistic Director, one Events Coordinator, one Technical Director,
one Outreach Director, one Musical Theater liaison, and one Lackey. In addition, there
shall be the option to create temporary positions for Assistants to any of the
aforementioned positions, to be created and dissolved as necessary.
Article V: Duties of the Officers
Section 1: Duties of the Executive Director
The Executive Director is the first point of contact for The Robinson Players. Therefore,
any communications to The Robinson Players should be addressed to the Executive
Director. Serving as the liaison between The Robinson Players and the Department of
Theater, the Executive Director works closely with the Faculty Advisor and the
Department Technical Director regarding matters including, but not limited to,
performance and rehearsal spaces, equipment, and materials. The Executive Director
chairs all general and Executive Board meetings and ensures the completion ofprojects by
presenting current issues to members of the Board. Furthermore, the Executive Director
functions as the Executive Producer of all productions sponsored by The Robinson
Players. It should be noted that this list of duties is not exhaustive; the Executive Director
is responsible for any miscellaneous business pertaining to The Robinson Players.
Section 2: Duties of the Treasurer
The Treasurer monitors all production budgets, records all income and expenses, signs
for cash advances and reimbursements, drafts the annual Bates College Student
Government budget request, and is responsible for all other financial matters.
Section 3: Duties of the Secretay
The Secretary maintains all membership records, including the e-mail listserve for
current members, a roster of CUITentvoting members, and an alumni directory.
Furthermore, in the event the Executive Director is unavailable, the Managing Director
shall temporarily assume his/her duties.
Section 4: Duties of the Aliistic Director
The Artistic Director is responsible for overseeing the progress of all Robinson
Players sponsored productions, assisting directors and designers working on said
productions, especially in obtaining production rights, and maintaining and
updating the Script Library.

Section 5: Duties of the Teclmical Director
The Technical Director maintains the sets, props, hardware, tools, and other technical
equipment of The Robinson Players. The Technical Director works closely with the
Department Technical Director regarding matters including, but not limited to,
performance and rehearsal spaces, equipment, and materials. It is the responsibility of
the Technical Director to make the purchases and acquisitions necessary to meet the
current and future needs of The Robinson Players. Furthermore, the Technical Director
is responsible for assisting directors, designers, and stage managers with any technical
help they might need for shows sponsored by The Robinson Players.
Section 6: Duties of the Outreach Director
It is the responsibility of the Outreach Director to organize and carry out the community
and intercollegiate outreach initiative of The Robinson Players. This initiative includes
running donation campaigns for local non-profit arts groups, coordinating and overseeing
workshops and other programs run through local schools and organizations, assisting
directors who wish to set up a community "tour" of their production, helping publicity
managers make contacts in the Lewiston! Auburn area, and any other activities that might
" bring The Robinson Players and the community beyond Bates College closer together.
Section 7: Duties of the Lackey
The Lackey shall not attend any meetings of The Robinson Players.
Article VI: Advisor
There shall be one faculty or staff advisor for The Robinson Players. The advisor will be
selected yearly by the Executive Board with the consent ofthe advisor nominee, and with
the approval of a majority of the general membership in a secret vote.
Article VII: Elections
Section 1: Calendat·
Elections for all of the positions of the Executive Board shall take place annually and
no later than two weeks before Final Exams of the second semester.
Section 2: Nominations
Nominations for candidates for the Executive Board shall be submitted to the Executive
Board during a selected general meeting during second semester. Nominations must
specify the position for which the nominee is being nominated. Any voting member may
make a nomination and any voting member may be nominated.
Section 3: Voting
Voting shall take place by secret ballot no later than two weeks before Final Exams of
the second semester at a general meeting of the membership with at least two thirds of
the membership present. Each office will be voted on separately. The candidate
receiving the most votes for each office will be elected to that respective office. The
order of elections shall follow the listing of Executive Board positions herein.
Section 4: TernlS of Office
All members of the Executive Board serve from the end of the academic year to the end
of the following academic year. There are no limits on the number of terms an Executive
Board member may serve in any position. No person may hold two or more Executive
Board positions in the same term of office. Exceptions can be made in the case of a
board member leaving for or retuming from abroad.
Article VII~: Meetings

SectIOn 1: General Meetmgs
General meetings of the entire membership will be held once a month. A quorum of one
quarter of the voting membership is needed in order for the meeting to take place. The
Executive Board is responsible for setting the agenda for general meetings.
Section 2: Executive Board Meetings
The Executive Board shall meet once a week.

Any production that receives any amount of its production budget from The Robinson
Players is considered a Robinson Players sponsored production. Amounts of sponsorship
are proposed by the Executive Director in consultation with the Executive Board and are
approved or amended by a majority vote of the membership present at the next general
meeting. Any items purchased for a sponsored production with club funds become the
property of The Robinson Players after the production.
Section 2: Varietv Shows
The Events Coordinator and Artistic Director are responsible for coordinating the various
variety shows and benefit performances that The Robinson Players may decide to sponsor
or host. These include, but are not limited to, Scene Night, the Campus-Wide
Performance Day, and benefit productions.
Section 3: Workshops
The Events Coordinator and Artistic Director are responsible for coordinating the annual
series of theatrical workshops The Robinson Players host. Workshops include, but are not
limited to, Warm-Up Exercises, Stage Combat, Mime, Dialogue and Monologue, etc.
Section 4: Parties/ Special Events
The Events Coordinator is responsible for coordinating whatever parties the membership
decides to hold or participate in. This includes, but is not limited to, Oscar Night, etc.
Section 5: Traditional Productions
The Robinson Players traditionally produce several annual events. These include, but are
not limited to, the Colby - Bowdoin - Bates One-Act Festival, The Vagina Monologues,
Oscar Night, Shakespeare on the Puddle, and Stages for All Ages.
Article X: Amendments
Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed by any voting member of The
Robinson Players at a general meeting. The amendment must be submitted in writing
to the Executive Director. At the next general meeting, said proposed amendment will
be voted on. A two-thirds majority of the membership present is required to pass an
amendment to the Constitution. Passed amendments are effective immediately.
