Economy actions Action Scores Theme 1 Develop a conservation/ wildlife economy with investment back into the natural environment – businesses to pay to improve the environment 41 Economy 2 Support for local people/businesses employing local people Next Steps Information: Jim Walker from Ullswater Steamers and Ross Wallace from Reach for Adventure talked about visitor giving schemes through Nurture Lakeland which they offer to their visitors/ clients. More information is available here: http://www.nurturelakeland.org/images/stories/pdfs/nlvgpbrochurefinal.pdf Action: Nurture Lakeland could promote Visitor Giving through a business workshop. There could also be more Ullswater specific projects that visitors could give to. Nurture Lakeland is already planning a session with local businesses, LDNPA will support this event to avoid duplication. Details will be circulated to the group. Discussion: The group discussed the need for employment other than Farming and Tourism (both of which are not well paid) to both attract people to the area and to keep young people in the area. The group also discussed opportunities for businesses and that it would be helpful for them to be in one place and easy to apply for. 26 Economy Action: This idea to be escalated to the Steering Group to for them to make links with the sub groups. Chris Tomlin (LDNPA) to raise this with the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the Local Action Group (LAG) and Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency (CREA) could also be contacted for advice. 26 Employment Information: Tom Driscoll, from the Patterdale Village Store and Post Office, stated that 85 per cent of the people that use their shop are not local and are on holiday. They also provide a local discount card which has been received well by some and not by others. The discussion moved on to wider tourism and the possibility of an Ullswater Card that provided a discount for Ullswater attractions and provided cross attraction publicity. This idea could be pursued by the UIlswater Association, however not all local businesses are part of the association. Action: This idea could be discussed a business workshop, or through the Ullswater Association. This needs to be prioritised by the Steering Group. 3 Improve/maintain existing shops and services including post office Links with 28 and 37 1 Action Scores Theme 4 Develop apprenticeship opportunities for young people to learn technical skills. Links with 12 20 Employment 6 Keep money from car parking in valley Links with 18 and 24 Next Steps Information: LDNPA are currently providing nine apprenticeship opportunities, this may expand in the Rusland area depending on the outcome of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid. Glencoyne Farm also provides apprenticeships. The group discussed the challenges of providing opportunities and how funding and support for them works. Action: This links to three above. A workshop could take place with organisations who have provided apprenticeships to share their experiences with other businesses, along with how to get funding or support to run apprenticeships. This needs to be prioritised by the Steering Group. Information: LDNPA car parking charges goes back in to delivering work in the park itself. The discussion moved on to the bins being removed at Pooley Bridge Car Park, this has led to a lot of litter. Action: Rec to talk to our Car parking team to find out what solutions there could be to replacing the bins. What is the income raised by LDNPA car parking and what is the spend in the valley? Jim Walker talked about an adopt a station volunteer scheme that works on the west coast, something similar could be pursued in Ullswater. Bins were removed from car parks recently due to the unsustainable cost of, and the high carbon footprint of our Property Team driving around the Lake District to empty them. Also, during the summer months the bins need emptying everyday, which we don’t have the capacity to do. Overflowing bins are both unsightly and encourage unwanted animal foraging. There are now signs in every car park without a bin asking people to take their litter home with them and, where possible, recycle. Other than that, we would hope that visitors would not want to despoil the landscape of the Ullswater Valley by dropping litter. There is certainly the scope for local ‘champions’ to adopt car parks. We can provide bin bags, litter pickers, gloves and a collection service should local people want to adopt their nearest car park. Please contact Rec Cathey, Park Management Ranger, for more information. 18 Transport Follow up information Spatially, the Ullswater Valley is roughly 9.3 per cent of the national Park and this figure has been used to calculate the LDNPAs spend in the area. The figures aren’t exact as we can’t be that precise, but they are our best estimate. Therefore, to follow up on what was asked at the last Economy sub-group meeting, the total amount that the Authority 2 spend annually in the valley is approximately £910,000 and the total Ullswater income from car parking is £133,000. 7 Develop better Wi-Fi to enable on-line access to oral history and local photographs Information: The Connecting Cumbria update states that Glenridding and Pooley Bridge are under evaluation, which means the Exchange upgrade is being evaluated as part of the Connecting Cumbria funded programme. Through the project there is broadband champions for each area for Ullswater and the following Parishes Barton, Martindale, Matterdale, Patterdale the Hub Coordinator is Fra Cooke [email protected] Moved from heritage 18 theme. 8 15 Tourism Action: The group agreed that promotion of existing activities was required more than a new wet weather attraction. A leaflet along the lines of ‘Ullswater in the Rain’ that promotes activities that can take place inside could be distributed in local hotels, bed and breakfasts and other attractions. This could link with action three. This idea to be shared with the Ullswater Association and Cumbria Tourism. Make more and better opportunities for visitors to develop sensitivity about their impact on the Ullswater environment Links with 10 and 11 14 Tourism Information: The group agreed that a promotion of what was Uniquely Ullswater would be a helpful marketing tool. There could be promotion and celebration of Red Squirrels, farming history, the mine and history of tourism. Action: This could be linked with the heritage project, and could include a children’s quiz that takes you to different attractions in Ullswater to find the answers. Idea to be escalated to the Steering Group for prioritisation. Involve more local people in educating tourists about local traditions, history, industrial heritage, wildlife, and geology 14 Tourism Links with 9 and 11 Be THE tourist destination for red squirrel watchers and protectors 13 Tourism Links with 9 and 10 Investigate scope for better wet weather attractions 9 10 11 Action: The group felt there was no further action required at this time, because of the work underway.
