Here is an opportunity for you to show your respect and homage to the great soul of APJ ABDUL KALAM. Infant Jesus church and School, Jogeshwari announces APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial GREEN HOUSING SOCIETY ROTATING TROPHY FOR ‘ZERO GARBAGE SOCEITY’ ZERO GARBAGE or WASTE MANAGEMENT is a project which helps to protect the environment by managing the waste generated by human beings in an efficient way. Efficient handling of waste begins from segregation of waste. Segregation of waste is simple concept. Every flat/house owner will segregate the waste produced at their homes into wet and dry (see reverse which is wet and dry waste). Wet waste is handed over to the BMC vehicles (as usual), and the dry waste is sold to the scrape dealers. The proceeds collected from the dry waste may be used for the welfare of the housing society workers (or as decided by the Managing Committee). The housing societies which start the segregation at source will be awarded a rotating trophy in the presence of a large congregation (example - after the Sunday Mass or during the major school programmes). Simple rules for this contest will be as follows: 1. When the Managing committee succeeds in educating its residents, they can issue a circular to start the segregation at their flats/houses. For a sample copy of the circular to be issued to the families, you may visit – www.stfrancisxavierpanvel.in. Go to the GEM section and click – Appeal letter-Zero Garbage. 2. Once all the residents begin the segregation at source, please fill the entry form at the bottom of this page and submit in our church office. The Parish Environment Cell (PEC) members will visit your society to verify if your claim is correct. 3. When the PEC members are convinced about the authenticity of your claim, a date will be mutually decided with the society reps to award Rotating Trophy. 4. After 3 months of successful completion of segregation by all the flat owners, the PEC members will visit your society again to see if you are continuing with the project. If yes, a date and venue will be mutually fixed to give away the token cash prize. (NGOs/corporate can come forward to sponsor this prize as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility-CSR). 5. The first housing society who succeeds and submits their ZERO GARBAGE CONTEST ENTRY FORM at our office will get a bonus token cash prize (double), besides the Rotating Trophy. 6. The trophy will be rotated to the housing societies who succeed subsequently (and inform our office). Procedure mentioned in no. 3 above will be repeated each time. 7. Please note – you have to do only segregation. If you go a step further by doing composting, bio-gas etc and prevent even the wet waste going to the dumping grounds, your society will get further appreciation. 8. For practical purpose, this contest is open only to the housing societies of Jogeshwari parish. 9. For further details on ,’ why zero garbage’, which is wet and dry waste etc. see overleaf. 10. When all the families of your society succeed in segregating the waste, please submit the ZERO GARBAGE CONTEST FORM which is at the bottom of page 2 (see reverse) Contd page 2.. Page 2 WHY ZERO GARBAGE PROJECT AT ALL? The dumping grounds of garbage are fast depleting. Lot of scarce land is used to dump the garbage. Crores of tax payers’ money is used to transport the garbage to the dumping grounds. The improper processing of garbage at the dumping grounds creates a number of health hazards to the neighbouring residents. The garbage thrown on the roadside, especially plastic causes floods in the rainy season. The stray dogs survive from the food from the roadside garbage, and creates lot of menace. Mishandled garbage becomes breeding ground for mosquitoes which causes diseases like Dengue and Malaria. The garbage thrown on the roadside, especially plastic causes floods in the rainy season. The unhygienic handling of the garbage at the housing societies are injurious to the health of the society sweepers/workers. Finally the wealth from waste (wet garbage) which could have produced valuable manure is lost forever. Following classification of wet and dry waste is just an example to help you 1. DRY GARBAGE Plastics, Metal Coconut shell Thermacol, Foam, Rexene Battery cells, Paper, Cloth Rubber, Bulbs….etc etc 2. WET GARBAGE Vegetable waste, Food waste Garden waste Wood pieces Hair/nails, Egg shells, Bones flesh Used cotton…etc etc Note To know more on ZERO GARBAGE, you may visit the website –www.stfrancisxavierpanvel.in. Go to GEM section and download/read PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) NO. 6 – ZERO GARBAGE. This PPT can also be used to educate your residents or other groups on the importance of waste management. Pope Francis says, “the earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth” – courtesy - internet As residents of this home, can we give a start to clean our home at least by segregating the garage produced by us.
