OLZA (Ol*e)

OLZA (Olše)
The river that flows through Třinec and its pollution
Our project activities
on WATER POLLUTION in Třinec
• We tried to find out as much as possible about water
pollution...
• We created some crosswords for our friends linked
with the environment.
• We visited our local sewage disposal plant.
• We took some pictures of our rivers and brooks.
• We made a presentation on this topic - we used the
data we found in the library, on the internet, in our
textbooks, in magazines, in newspapers.
How does water pollution occur?
We found out that water pollution results mainly from:
• harmful industrial processes and households
• pesticides and other chemicals used in agriculture
• waste disposal sites
• substandard sewage treatment plants ...

How long is the Olza?
• 16 km in Poland, 46 km in the Czech Republic
• 24 km border between Poland and the Czech Republic
The river flows through several large cities:
Jablunkov, Třinec, Český Těšín, Karviná
The river springs in Poland
near the village Istebna
In the photos you can
see the river in winter
(February 2013)
The Olza is the right tributary of the Oder River.
Olza inspired many artists, writers, singers...
In the past a lot of people went swimming there.
Nowadays only those who are “brave enough “,
because when you go swimming there
you can get an allergy or red skin or a rash ...
Even some dogs have troubles with their hair
after having a bath in the river.
!!!
Unfortunately,
before 1989 we did not solve the water pollution
Now we know that if we want to have cleaner waterways,
some measures must be taken.
First, discharges to water from industrial processes
should be controlled and the number of sewage
treatment plants should be increased.
We should also find technologies for saving water and
reduce the amount of chemicals.
In Třinec there are two main sources
of water pollution:
1) industrial production
2) communal waste
( blocked sumps and cesspools )
( inconvenient sewerage )
Today these both sources are under the strict control.
What measures were taken?
A lot of money was invested into the improvement
of the situation. Two large projects were carried out:
• 1) sewage disposal plant modernization
(Třinec – Konská) 2,2 mil eur
• 2) revitalization of the border river Olza
(8 towns and villages were included) 57 mil eur

clean water in the river
comeback of some species:
Our visit to sewage disposal plant
in TŘINEC-KONSKÁ
The sewage from our town and its surrroundings
is cleaned here. We watched how it worked.
Our meeting with the director
of our local sewage disposal plant.
The parts of the cleaning process.
The laboratory- the samples of water are regularly
taken and checked here.
In case of an ecological disaster
we have an immersion baffle (wall) –
a floating device used to contain oil on a body of water.
The river near the sewage disposal plant is
already full of life, here is the evidence.
