Media Madness - Take The Challenge Now

Media Madness
Becky and Crew 11th Grade
In the Beginning…
• Exposure to media increases
aggressiveness and anti-social behavior.
Television watching can change a child’s
natural behavior, even by age two.
Exposure to violence has been linked to
ADD and ADHD in children. The rate of
ADD/ADHD has risen by 600% since
1990. Kids can develop unhealthy habits
early in life that can be long lasting.
ADD/ADHD Antidote?
JUST TURN IT OFF!
• The flashing colors and changing of
channels can affect a brain of any age, but a
young brain most drastically. Extreme
exposure can lessen the stimulation of the
logical right side of the brain.
• Reducing a toddler’s TV time to very little or
none will help prevent these disorders. The
absence of such media influences has been
proven to be nearly as effective as ritalin, and
has more benefits afterward.
Time Flies
• The average TV in America is on three
to four hours daily.
• The American Psychological
Association found that by high school
graduation, a student will have spent
more time in front of the television than
in school.
• The average 7th grader views four
hours of television daily, with 60%
violent content. They also play four
hours of 50% violent games weekly.
Turning Back Time
• Again, one of the simplest
solutions to this addiction is
TURNING IT OFF!
• Children can be addicted to
violence, so parents need to
become involved. Establishing a
family night or creating alternative
activities will help break the bad
habit, and cleanse victims of the
regrettable horrors on the media.
Television Training
• The movies, violent programming, and video games common in
American society train killing more effectively than even the most in
depth military training.
• One adolescent criminal opened fire in a chaotic classroom. He hit
five students with head shots and three with upper torso shots. The
most highly trained, qualified law-enforcement agents hit with only
one in every five shots, while this boy hit with every one of his. His
only training was a video arcade game in his garage.
• The many murders performed in the media demolishes the ingrained
inability to kill.
Terror Turnoff
How can we prevent such violent inclinations and
stop the training of teens?
• The simple way to prevent this
training, is to keep these games
away from the kids. There is
nothing wrong with playing
pinball, but realistic animation
killing has to stop.
• Parents and kids alike should heed
the warnings on games, and
refrain from buying them.
Rationality or Rights?
• As you have read, media
violence is a serious
problem in America. It is
the duty of the
government to protect the
next generation, but how
can it shelter children
while protecting the rights
of Americans, young and
old?
Society Solutions
• The government has numerous options
regarding the monitoring of media
violence. It could:
• Regulate prime time viewers. If the
television producers agree not to show
their programs at the times when
younger children watch most, perhaps
less violence will seen by kids.
• Government could also promote
educational television by funding or
otherwise assisting quality television
providers.
