Message from GRF Founder President
One of the initiatives of the Global Rainbow Foundation for 2013 is to empower and bring a
change in the lives of amputees in Mauritius, through enabling them to become mobile through
wearing an artificial limb. Mobility has a profound effect on a range of aspects of life –
independence, daily activities, personal care, ability to work and lifestyle. The motto is that
investing in helping individuals to achieve their own potential has rewards for the individual,
their family, their community and society in general.
To this end, the Global Rainbow Foundation in collaboration with the JAIPUR FOOT is
conducting an on-the-spot artificial limb fitment camp in Mauritius to provide 100 amputees
resultant mobility. It will be held for a week as follows:
CAMP DATE: 01st July 2013 TO 08th July 2013 at Sir James Burty David Recreational Centre,
Pte Aux Sables, Mauritius.
Indeed, Fundraising is inevitable for such social initiative and the Global Rainbow Foundation
is making a humble request to the corporate firms in Mauritius either through CSR or any other
social empowerment agenda to partner and contribute to make this project a success.
Donors will be encouraged to adopt an amputee whereby each firm can contribute towards an
artificial limb prosthese (Rs 10,000) for one amputee. Donors can also propose to GRF any
amputee that is in need of an artificial limb. It is believed that this method will contribute to a
major proportion of funds required for the long term goal of this project and make it an annual
empowerment event.
GRF looks forward to welcome any partnership and contribution from the corporate sector to
realise this project. Let’s all unite for a noble cause and thank you for your Support and
Collaboration.

Background Info:
The disabled persons are often looked upon as a burden on the society and are unable to become
productive members of the society. In the past, the disability related issues have not given the
due consideration. Currently they are being recognized as a cross cutting development issues and
also are gradually being seen more as an issue of right than charity. In order to enhance socioeconomic development, Global Rainbow Foundation cannot afford to leave these segments of
people out of the development process. Planned development is neither possible nor desirable
without comprehensive and sensible programme for all section of people. The prostheses or
artificial Limb will be provided free of charge for the amputees in order to ensure their easy and
free movement.
The objectives of this initiative is to



improve the amputee’s quality of life

Origin of Jaipur-Foot
Dr. P. K. Sethi, an orthopedic surgeon from Jaipur, developed a foot, which can be used by
people, who lost the leg and can walk without crutches and run as well. During 1968 to 1975, he
sold 50 limbs to needy persons. This invention was revolutionary and earned an international
Raman Magsaysay award. However Dr. P. K. Sethi was not a marketer. Since Dr. P. K. Sethi
belonged to Jaipur in Rajasthan and did his pioneering work of developing the foot in Jaipur, the
foot is known as Jaipur-Foot. In 1975, it was Bhagawan Mahaveer Vikalang Sahayata
Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur, who met Dr. P. K. Sethi and got his permission to develop it further
and market it.
Our fund raising will help Jaipur Foot to support many more people affected by severe
disabilities regain their mobility and play an active role in Mauritius. Jaipur Foot works to
support disabled people, particularly the poor, enabling them to regain mobility and become selfreliant and fully participating members of the community.

Bhagawan Mahaveer Vikalang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS)
On the occasion of 2500th death anniversary of Bhagavan Mahaveer, Dr. D. R. Mehta, who is a
chief Patron, established BMVSS in March, 1975. BMVSS started giving the Jaipur foot free of
cost to physically challenged people including landmines. The result of such an effort showed
that during 1975 till 2009, i.e. in 34 years’ time, they could fit Jaipur foot to 360,000 people and
600,000 people got calipers, crutches and tricycles across the world. While doing this
BMVSS do not discriminate cast, creed, religion, nationality or the economic affordability. To
make 960,000 handicapped people mobile again is no joke by any measure. On account of this
large turnover of BMVSS, it has been the largest organization in the world. BMVSS does the
charitable work in India and abroad. BMVSS`s devices are low cost, locally produced prosthetic
devices. Since then it has been branded as Jaipur Foot.
Every year BMVSS fits 17,000 to 20,000 artificial limbs. Work was spread all over India
through its 16 branches. Further almost 40-50 on the spot limb fitment mobile camps are held in
a year, reaching the most disadvantaged in the far and distant areas. BMVSS`s limbs attract well
to do people also because of its quality, but BMVSS`s focus is to help the needy poor people.
BMVSS`s project is a combination of technical, social, financial and managerial skills. BMVSS
help 30 limb fitting institutions independently in India by transferring technology and training
people.

Technological advancement in Jaipur Foot
One of the reasons for increasing the spread is the constant up gradation in technology. Rubber
of different types of well-known suppliers is helping. Some structural changes in the design of
foot pieces have also been made. For socket, aluminium has been replaced by lighter but high
quality polymers. For the sake of alignment purposes, latest systems like wall frames, laser liners
brims etc. have been used. The total contact sockets have also been used in Jaipur foot.
It is worth stressing that the blending of the scientific principles of prosthetic science with the
rich traditional craftsmanship was necessary and this led to the birth of BMVSS. As a result of
this, the products of BMVSS are comparable to those products by commercial organization. This
also highlights the social philosophy of BMVSS viz. the poor is being given the products free of
cost.
