Participation in the study
If you and your child(ren) want to participate in the study, you can choose from several options.
In the following description of the options are children who previously participated in IDEFICS
called "IDEFICS children".
Option A1: only IDEFICS-child participates, WITHOUT giving a blood sample
For the IDEFICS-child this means the following:
 Measurements of weight, height, heart rate and body composition
 Complete a reward questionnaire: questions about feelings, events, eating behaviour and
reward sensitivity (duration: about 45 min).
Completion of a food questionnaire (SACANA) on the computer on 3 different days, possibly
with the help of a parent (duration: about 30 min each time). This will be further explained on
the family day itself on which the first of the three food questionnaires can be completed
immediately.
For one of the parents of the IDEFICS-child this means:
 Fetching medical questionnaire (including questions about pregnancy and early childhood)
by a competent person (duration: approx 10min) on the family day or by phone afterwards.
 Reward Questionnaire (online or to complete on paper at home): general information
about your child, questions about sensitivity to reward and self-monitoring skills of your
child, questions about the habitat of your child including eating and exercise pattern
(duration: about 40 min ).

You can also separately mark whether the IDEFICS-child wants to wear an
accelerometer for 7 consecutive days, and wants to fill in a movement diary.
Option A2: Only IDEFICS-child participates, WITH giving a blood sample.
Same content as option A1 along with a blood sampling.

You can also separately mark whether the IDEFICS-child wants to wear an accelerometer for 7
consecutive days, and wants to fill in a movement diary.

Option AB: IDEFICS-child and at least 1 parent participate (possibly also brother(s) or
sister(s))
Same content as option A1…
…with extra for the IDEFICS-child:
 Measurements of abdominal circumference and blood pressure.
 Only for teenagers ≥ 12 years: Completing a teenager questionnaire on an iPad: questions
about lifestyle and living environment, physical fitness and eating habits (duration: about 45
min).
…with extra for the participating parent:
 Measurements of height, weight, body composition and possibly abdominal circumference
and blood pressure.
Completing food questionnaire (SACANA) on the computer on 3 different days (duration:
about 30 min each time).This will be further explained on the family day itself on which the
first of the three food questionnaires can be completed immediately.

If participating child(ren) < 12 years: completing child questionnaire (1 questionnaire per
participating child < 12 years) (duration: about 40 min).
For the participating brother(s) or sister(s) this means:
 Measurements of height, weight, heart rate, body composition, abdominal circumference
and blood pressure.
 Completion of a food questionnaire (SACANA) on the computer on 3 different days, possibly
with the help of a parent (duration: about 30 min each time). This will be further explained on
the family day itself on which the first of the three food questionnaires can be completed
immediately.
 Only for teenagers ≥ 12 years: Completing a teenager questionnaire on an ipad: questions
about lifestyle and living environment, physical fitness and eating habits (duration: about 45
min).

You can also separately mark whether the participant…
1. wants to wear an accelerometer for 7 consecutive days, and wants to fill in a
movement diary.
2. Wants a blood sampling being done.
3. Wants to provide a saliva sample (for genetic analysis).
4. Wants to give a urine sample (of the morning of the family day).
5. wants to play computer games to find out how choices are made (duration: about 15
min, from 8 years)
6. Wants to complete a family questionnaire (duration: about 10 min; only for parents)
7. Wants to complete a parent questionnaire (duration: about 15 min; only for parents,
one questionnaire per participating parent)

This form must be filled in for the first IDEFICS-child, then again for the participating parent
and then for any other participating family members (other parent or brother (s) or sister (s)
Attention
1. Should you wish to participate Option B, without completing the reward questionnaires,
you can. The application then proceeds by email at the following email address: …
2. If you participate in the study and you and/or your child are willing to provide a blood
sample, we will inform you, if you wish, as soon as possible of the results of the blood
analyzes.
3. The terms "parent" refers to "legal guardian" and not necessarily the biological parents.
If you are the only responsible guardian, simply fill in the details concerning yourself.
