HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR INTERNSHIP SUMMER 2017 Setting Expectations . The first few weeks are crucial Why are you doing an internship? You are there to build the connection between your past education/work experience and your post-MBA career Your Past Education and Work Experience Your Internship Your MBA Your Post MBA Career Why are you doing an internship? • To get experience • To continue to build your skill set • To turn theory into practice • To test for fit – company, industry and role It’s also possible… • That you are there to fill a ‘gap’ over the summer OR that you are not in your summer internship of choice • You will need to find ways to make the most of your time and set yourself up for future success Consider all of the possible outcomes of a summer internship… Possible outcomes of the Summer Internship • • • • • • • Job Offer for FT Leverage internship experience to cultivate a new offer for FT Hands on experience and learning into potential career choice Good “fit” test Use knowledge/experience & time to build your own business Use the time to network and secure contacts in your industry/function Spend the internship working to get yourself ready for full-time recruitment The Ultimate Outcome Your manager’s and colleagues’ opinion of you and your work VS Treat your Internship like an interview The employer will be looking to assess 3 things: • • • Your capability – do you have what it ‘takes’ to be successful in the organization, long-term? Whether you are a good FIT for the organization and/or the team Demonstration that YOU really want to work for the organization. Are you having fun at work? Making the most of your time 1. If you have landed a summer internship by June 1 - FIP Course Flexible Internship- Academic Complete your employment reporting in RCareer and inform your coach. You will automatically be enrolled in RSM1380 Applied Management: Placement & matched with an academic mentor If you have not landed an internship by June 1 Begin/continue Fall internship search Mid Summer – Career Coach Touchpoint Proceed with chosen summer courses & begin/continue your Fall internship search Continue to check RCareer for Fall Internship postings and stay connected with your Career Coach for support with your internship search. Look out for an email from your Career Coach for a mid summer check-in. July 8 We want to know how you are doing (with your Fall internship and/or Full-Time search) and how we can help! Early release version of Class of 2018 Resume Book August 8 Graduate Job Postings Go Live Class of 2017 begins to view Graduate Postings. August 15 Graduate Info Sessions go live to students Students begin registering for employer Information Sessions focused on graduate opportunity. Starting Tuesday, September 5 Fall 2017 Graduate Recruiting Info Sessions kick off. September 5-8 is a dedicated week of graduate oncampus Information Sessions. Sessions continue throughout September.
