Phonics is the ability to decode words.
It does not follow that your child will be on a high
reading level just because they can decode words
phonetically.
Comprehension + Phonic knowledge
= Good Reading
What is the Phonics Screening
Check?
• Government initiative that is a quick
and easy check of your child’s phonics
knowledge.
• The check will take place during the
week commencing Monday 12th June.
What is the Phonics Screening
Check?
• Child will sit with their class teacher, in a quiet
room, and be asked to read 40 words aloud
• 20 words are real words, 20 are non-words
• The check will only take a few minutes to
complete and there is no time limit. If a child is
struggling the teacher will stop the test or let the
child have a break before returning to it.

• Oxford Owl Website
After the check
• You will be informed whether your child has
reached the threshold for the test – probably at
the same time as the reports are given out
• If your child has not reached the threshold we
will let you know what will be put in place for
them in Year 2 to help them – they will repeat
the check in Year 2
