Sighting of the New Moon
‫أدعية عند رؤية الهالل‬
Rabbi wa Rabbukallah
When your eyes fall on the new moon, turn
yourself towards the Qibla, raise both your
hands towards the sky, and address the
moon with the following words:
In the name of Allah,
The Beneficent, The Merciful
My Lord and your Lord is Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
O Allah for us let this month be a period of peace, faith,
safety and total submission to Thy will; make us walk apace
swiftly to that which Thou likes and approves.
O Allah pour out much blessings on us in this month, make
available for us its generous good and assistance,
and keep us safe from the harm, evil, misfortune and
mischief that may try to trap us in this month.
Allahumma Ahillahu Alayna
It has been narrated that when the Holy
Prophet (a.s) would see the new moon
of Ramadhan, he would turn his face to
the kiblah direction and say:
O Allah: (please do) cause this
crescent to carry with it for us
security and faith
‫ان‬
َ ُ‫اللّ ُه ّم أ َ ِهلّه‬
ِ ‫علَ ْينَا ِباأل َ ْم ِن َواإلي َم‬
And safety and Islam
‫الم‬
ْ ‫سال َم ِة َواإل‬
ّ ‫َوال‬
ِ ‫س‬
And encompassing good health
and repulsion of ailments,
‫سقَ ِام‬
ْ َ ‫َوالعَافِيَ ِة ال ُم َجلّلَ ِة َو ِدفَاعِ األ‬
And assistance on praying, observing
fasting, and doing acts of worship,
‫صيَ ِام َوال ِقيَ ِام‬
َ ‫َوالعَ ْو ِن‬
ّ ‫صال ِة َوال‬
ّ ‫علَى ال‬
And on reciting the Qur'an.
.‫آن‬
َ ِ‫َوت‬
ِ ‫الو ِة القُ ْر‬
O Allah: (please do) keep us sound
for the month of Ramadhan,
َ ‫ض‬
َ ‫ش ْه ِر َر َم‬
،‫ان‬
َ ‫سلّ ْمنَا ِل‬
َ ‫اللّ ُه ّم‬
And accept our deeds during it,
،‫سلّ ْمهُ ِمنَّا‬
َ َ ‫َوت‬
And save us during it,
‫سلّ ْمنَا فِي ِه‬
َ ‫َو‬
Until the month of Ramadhan
will not elapse
َ ‫ض‬
َ ‫ش ْه ُر َر َم‬
‫ان‬
َ ‫ي‬
َ ‫عنَّا‬
َ ‫َحتَّى يَ ْنقَ ِض‬
Except that You have pardoned us,
forgiven us, and had mercy upon us.
َ ‫عنَّا َو‬
.‫غفَ ْرتَ لَنَا َو َر ِح ْمتَنَا‬
َ َ‫عفَ ْوت‬
َ ‫َوقَ ْد‬
Allahumma Qad Hazara
Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a.s) is also
reported to have said: When you see
the new moon of Ramadhan, you may
say the following:
O Allah: the month of Ramadhan
has commenced,
َ ‫ض‬
َ ‫ش ْه ُر َر َم‬
َ ‫اللّ ُه ّم قَ ْد َح‬
‫ان‬
َ ‫ض َر‬
And You have made obligatory upon
us to observe fasting during it,
ْ ‫َوقَ ِد ْافتَر‬
،ُ‫علَ ْينَا ِصيَا َمه‬
َ َ‫ضت‬
And You revealed the Qur'an in
it,
َ ‫َوأ َ ْن َز ْلتَ فِي ِه القُ ْر‬
‫آن‬
As guidance for people and clear
proofs of true guidance and
distinction (between the right and
the wrong).
.‫ان‬
ٍ ‫اس َوبَيّنَا‬
ِ َّ‫َى ِللن‬
ِ َ‫ت ِم َن ال ُهدَى َوالفُ ْرق‬
ً ‫ُهد‬
O Allah: (please) help us observe
fasting in it,
،‫ام ِه‬
َ ‫اللّ ُه ّم أ َ ِعنَّا‬
ِ َ‫علَى ِصي‬
And accept it from us,
،‫َوتَقَبّ ْلهُ ِمنَّا‬
And keep us safe during it,
،‫سلّ ْمنَا فِي ِه‬
َ ‫َو‬
And help us observe it
adequately,
،ُ‫سلّ ْمنَا ِم ْنه‬
َ ‫َو‬
And keep it sound for us with
easiness and good health from You.
،‫س ٍر ِم ْن َك َوعَافِيَ ٍة‬
ْ ُ‫سلّ ْمهُ لَنَا فِي ي‬
َ ‫َو‬
You verily have power over all
things.
،‫ير‬
َ ‫إنّ َك‬
َ ‫علَى ُك ّل‬
ٌ ‫ش ْي ٍء قَ ِد‬
O the All-beneficent, O the Allmerciful.
ُ ‫يَا َر ْح‬
.‫من يَا َر ِحي ُم‬
Ayyuhal Khalqul muti
Sayyid ibn Tawsus has narrated that Imam
Zaynul Abidin (as), once, gazed at the new
moon of the month of Ramadhan while he
was walking. He therefore stopped and said
the following:
O obedient creature,
،‫ق ال ُم ِطي ُع‬
ُ ‫أَيّ َها ال َخ ْل‬
speedy and untiring,
،‫س ِري ُع‬
ّ ‫ب ال‬
ُ ِ‫الدَّائ‬
frequenter of the mansions of
determination,
،‫ال ُمت َ َردّدُ فِي َمنَ ِاز ِل الت ّ ْق ِدي ِر‬
moving about in the sphere of
governance!
،‫ف فِي فَلَ ِك الت ّ ْد ِب ِير‬
َ َ ‫ال ُمت‬
ُ ‫ص ّر‬
I have faith in Him Who lights up
darknesses through you,
ّ ‫آ َم ْنتُ ِب َم ْن نَ ّو َر ِب َك ال‬
،‫ظلَ َم‬
illuminates jet-black shadows by
you,
َ ‫َوأ َ ْو‬
،‫ض َح ِب َك البُ َه َم‬
appointed you one of the signs
of His kingdom
،‫ت ُم ْل ِك ِه‬
ِ ‫َو َجعَلَ َك آيَةً ِم ْن آيَا‬
And one of the marks of His
authority,
َ ‫س ْل‬
،‫طانِ ِه‬
ِ ‫َوعَال َمةً ِم ْن عَال َما‬
ُ ‫ت‬
So, He identified time through
You,
ّ ‫فَ َحدّ ِب َك‬
َ ‫الز َم‬
،‫ان‬
And humbled you through
increase and decrease,
،‫ان‬
َ ‫امت َ َهنَ َك ِبال َك َما ِل َوالنّ ْق‬
ْ ‫َو‬
ِ ‫ص‬
And rising and setting,
ّ ‫َوال‬
‫طلُوعِ َواألُفُو ِل‬
And illumination and eclipse.
‫وف‬
ِ ‫س‬
ُ ‫ار ِة َوال ُك‬
َ َ‫َواإلن‬
In all of this you are obedient to
Him,
،‫فِي ُك ّل ذ ِل َك أ َ ْنتَ لَهُ ُم ِطي ٌع‬
And prompt toward His will.
،‫س ِري ٌع‬
َ ‫إرادَتِ ِه‬
َ ‫َوإلَى‬
Glory be to Him! How wonderful is
what He has arranged in Your
situation!
!‫ب َما دَبّ َر ِم ْن أ َ ْم ِر َك‬
ُ
َ ‫س ْب َحانَهُ َما أ َ ْع َج‬
How subtle what He has made
for Your task!
َ ‫َوأ َ ْل‬
!‫صنَ َع فِي شَأْنِ َك‬
َ ‫ف َما‬
َ ‫ط‬
He has made You the key to a
new month for a new situation.
،ٍ‫ث أل َ ْم ٍر َحا ِدث‬
َ ‫َجعَلَ َك ِم ْفتَا َح‬
ٍ ‫ش ْه ٍر َحا ِد‬
So I ask Allah, my Lord and Your
Lord,
،‫اّلل َربّي َو َربّ َك‬
ْ َ ‫فَأ‬
َ ّ ‫سأ َ ُل‬
my Creator and Your Creator,
،‫َو َخا ِل ِقي َو َخا ِلقَ َك‬
my Determiner and Your
Determiner,
،‫َو ُمقَد ِّري َو ُمقَد َّر َك‬
my Form-giver and Your Formgiver,
‫ص ّو َر َك‬
َ ‫ص ّو ِري َو ُم‬
َ ‫َو ُم‬
that He bless Mu¦ammad and
his Household
،ٍ‫علَى ُم َح ّم ٍد َوآ ِل ُم َح ّمد‬
َ ‫ي‬
َ ُ‫أ َ ْن ي‬
َ ّ ‫صل‬
and appoint You a crescent of
blessings not effaced by days
،‫َوأ َ ْن يَ ْجعَلَ َك ِهال َل بَ َر َك ٍة ال ت َ ْم َحقُ َها األَيَّا ُم‬
and of purity not defiled by sins;
َ ‫َو‬
،‫س َها اآلثَا ُم‬
ُ ّ‫ار ٍة ال تُدَن‬
َ ‫ط َه‬
a crescent of security from
blights
،‫ت‬
ِ ‫ِهال َل أ َ ْم ٍن ِم َن اآلفَا‬
and of safety from evil deeds;
،‫ت‬
ِ ‫سيّئَا‬
َ ‫َو‬
ّ ‫سال َم ٍة ِم َن ال‬
a crescent of auspiciousness
containing no misfortune,
،‫س فِي ِه‬
َ ‫ِهال َل‬
َ ‫س ْع ٍد ال نَ ْح‬
of prosperity accompanied by no
adversity,
،ُ‫َويُ ْم ٍن ال نَ َكدَ َمعَه‬
of ease not mixed with difficulty,
،‫س ٌر‬
ُ ُ‫س ٍر ال يُ َم ِاز ُجه‬
ْ ‫ع‬
ْ ُ‫َوي‬
of good unstained by evil;
،‫َوخ ْي ٍر ال يَشُوبُهُ ش َّر‬
a crescent of security and faith,
،‫ان‬
ٍ ‫ِهال َل أ َ ْم ٍن َوإي َم‬
favor and good-doing,
،‫ان‬
ْ ‫َونِ ْع َم ٍة َو‬
َ ‫إح‬
ٍ ‫س‬
safety and submission!
.‫الم‬
ْ ‫سال َم ٍة َوإ‬
َ ‫َو‬
ٍ ‫س‬
O Allah, bless Mu¦ammad and
his Household,
‫علَى ُم َح ّم ٍد َوآ ِل ُم َح ّم ٍد‬
َ ‫ص ّل‬
َ ‫اللّ ُه ّم‬
place us among the most satisfied of
those over whom the crescent has
risen,
َ ‫ضى َم ْن‬
َ ‫اجعَ ْلنَا ِم ْن أ َ ْر‬
،‫علَ ْي ِه‬
َ ‫طلَ َع‬
ْ ‫َو‬
the purest of those who have
looked upon it,
َ َ‫َوأ َ ْز َكى َم ْن ن‬
،‫ظ َر إلَ ْي ِه‬
the most fortunate of those who
have worshiped You under it;
،‫سعَدَ َم ْن تَعَبّدَ لَ َك فِي ِه‬
ْ َ ‫َوأ‬
give us the success during [the
new month] to repent,
َّ ‫َو َوفّ ْقنَا اللّ ُه ّم فِي ِه ِلل‬
،‫ع ِة َوالت ّ ْوبَ ِة‬
َ ‫طا‬
preserve us within it from misdeeds
and exposition to punishment,
،‫َوا ْع ِص ْمنَا فِي ِه ِم َن اآلث َ ِام َوال َح ْوبَ ِة‬
allot to us within it thanksgiving
for Your favor,
،‫ش ْك َر النّ ْع َم ِة‬
ُ ‫َوأ َ ْو ِز ْعنَا فِي ِه‬
clothe us during it in the shields
of well-being,
،‫سنَا فِي ِه ُجنَ َن العَافِيَ ِة‬
ْ ‫َوأ َ ْل ِب‬
and complete for us Your kindness
by perfecting therein obedience to
You!
َ ‫ستِ ْك َما ِل‬
،َ‫المنّة‬
َ ‫طا‬
َ ‫َوأَتْ ِم ْم‬
ِ ‫عتِ َك فِي ِه‬
ْ ‫علَ ْينَا ِبا‬
Surely You are All-kind,
Praiseworthy.
ُ َّ‫إنّ َك أ َ ْنتَ ال َمن‬
،ُ‫ان ال َح ِميد‬
And bless Mu¦ammad and his
Household, the good, the pure.
ّ ‫علَى ُم َح ّم ٍد َوآ ِل ِه ال‬
َ ‫طيّ ِب‬
،‫ين‬
َ ُ‫اّلل‬
َ ‫َو‬
ّ ‫صلَّى‬
And grant us aid from You to carry
out that which You have ordered us
to do in it;
‫علَى َما نَدَ ْبتَنَا إلَ ْي ِه‬
َ ‫اجعَ ْل لَنَا فِي ِه ع َْونا ً ِم ْن َك‬
ْ ‫َو‬
Such as the obedience to You which
You have made incumbent upon us,
َ ‫ض‬
‫عتِ َك‬
َ ‫طا‬
ِ ‫ِم ْن ُم ْفت َ َر‬
and accept them from us, for You
are the most Generous of all those
who show generosity
،‫َوتَقَبّ ْل َها إنّ َك األ َ ْك َر ُم ِم ْن ُك ّل َك ِر ٍيم‬
and the most Merciful of all
those who show mercy.
،‫َواأل َ ْر َح ُم ِم ْن ُك ّل َر ِح ٍيم‬
Respond! Respond! O the Lord of
the Worlds.
َ ‫ب العَالَ ِم‬
َ ‫آم‬
َ ‫آم‬

ِ ‫ين‬
