How have toys and games changed from when my grandparents

English: We are going to look at information texts and
learn about the features of non-fiction books. We are going
to make our own non-fiction book about our favourite toy.
Then we will look at fiction books relating to our topic, with
a particular focus on the story I love you, Blue Kangaroo by
Emma Chichester Clark. We are going to look at the
characters’ feelings throughout the story and write a letter
from Blue Kangaroo to Lily.
History: We are going to look at toys from the past and
compare them to toys we have now. We will look at the
similarities and differences between the different time
periods.
We are going to look closely at how teddy bears have
changed. We will learn about the history of the teddy bear
and make a time line to show the changes.
We are going to look at games children used to play in the
past, particularly games played outside. We are going to
have a go at playing some games our grandparents used to
play.
Computing: This half term we are going to be digital
painters. We are going to create a winter/Christmas scene on
the computer. The children will log on, create their art work,
save it and print it.
Music: We are lucky enough to have Mrs. Lorimer for
Musical Express once a week. As well as learning songs for
the Nativity production, the children will sing songs related
to our topic and continue the work start last half term,
learning about instruments in the orchestra.
Maths: We will be exploring numbers to 50, including
counting forwards and backwards, ordering, estimating and
finding one more/one less than a given number.
We are going to continue our work with number bonds to 10
(e.g. 3+7 = 10), so that our recall becomes quicker. We will
also look at subtraction and how we can use our number
knowledge to solve word problems. In the latter part of the
term we will learn about money which we will use in a role
play toy shop.
Autumn 2
How have toys and games
changed from when my
grandparents were young?
PSHE: Our Social, Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)
we will focus on friendship and what it means to be a good
friend. We will look at emotions, seeing things from another
person’s point of view and also how to make up with our
friends if we fall out. We will be developing our team
working skills as well as learning how to recognise and
manage our feelings.
Our Learning Hero this half term is Richard Resilient
RE: We are going to learn about advent; what it is and what
it means for Christians. We will talk about why Christmas is
important to Christians and we will learn the Christmas story
in preparation for the Nativity production.
Science: We are going to be answering the question ‘What
materials were used to make toys in the past?’
We are going to learn about different materials and their
properties and how we can sort objects/toys according to the
material they are made out of. We will look at how the materials
used to make toys have changed over time and we are going to
explore the most suitable material to do an important job. This
will involve chocolate and an experiment!
Art and Design: Our Art links with our history work about the
games children used to play outside. We are going to look at the
Pieter Bruegel’s painting Children’s Games and discuss what the
children are doing in the picture. The children will be encouraged
to ask questions to deepen their understanding. After the children
have played some games from the past they are going to paint
themselves playing a game and we are going to make our own
class painting of Children’s Games.
Design Technology: We will design and make a board game. We
will then write instructions and teach others how to play our
game.
PE: In PE will be continuing with our Gymnastics topic. We will
be looking at how we can transfer our body weight including
jumping, rolling and rocking in different ways. We will also look
at twisting and turning and making different shapes with our
body. We explore balancing and travelling in imaginative ways
and will conclude our gymnastics work by creating a routine
combining the different skills we have learned in the autumn term.
The other PE lesson will be taught by Mrs Debney who will be
teaching dance.
Phonics and handwriting will be taught as stand-alone lessons.
Guided reading will focus on understanding and comprehension.
Some of the books will be linked to the children’s reading level
whilst others will link to our topic.
