Task 1 Body Language (page 223)
When we communicate with people from other
cultures, our body language sometimes helps make the
communication easier and more effective, but body
language is heavily culture-loaded. Therefore, with
people of different cultural backgrounds, one should be
cautious while making gestures. Otherwise, troubles or
embarrassments may occur. Try to show some gestures
of the kind to the class. You don’t need restrict
yourselves to Chinese and American cultures only.
Then work in groups to discuss what the following
gestures mean in a Chinese and American context.
Stamping the foot/feet
Clapping for oneself after a speech
Giving or receiving a gift using two hands
Patting another adult’s head
Stamping the foot/feet
In China: to show anger

Giving or receiving a gift using two hands

Patting another adult’s head
In China: Patting a child’s head shows
affection, yet patting an adult is insulting.
In Britain and America: to show sympathy,
affection and encouragement
In India, Sri Lanka and Thailand: It’s shocking
and offensive, because the head is believed to be
the seat of the soul.

What is the special meaning of a wedding?
The bride and groom promise to spend
the rest of their life together.
More than four million Americans get married each year.
Some of these people will have a traditional wedding
ceremony in a religious center, a hotel or a social club.
These couples may invite hundreds of people to their
celebrations.
Other couples will have a simple ceremony performed
by a judge in a public building. They will invite only close
family members and friends. They may not have the money
to spend on a big wedding. Or they may want to save
money for a wedding trip to a faraway place or to buy a
house.
Americans get married in different ways. But the
meaning of all these weddings is the same. The bride and
groom promise to spend the rest of their life together.
