BLACK OAK MEN’S CLUB JANUARY 2016 NEWSLETTER Two-Man Best Ball Well we managed to squeeze in our tournament around the smattering of rain drops. Despite the weather we had a good turnout to start the year off. It’s amazing what effect one of our favorite formats has on our participation. Because of the good turnout, we were able to payout for three places for four flights. Just like last year’s event, when the weather was great, we had 62 players or 31 teams. We had a lot of good scores turned in in spite of the playing conditions. The best score of the day was turned in by the team of Terry Doan and Jeff Traweek - a net 60. All of the placing teams shot net 67 or better. The Second Flight winner was the team of Wally Hieronimus and Dan Chancellor with a net 61. The Third flight winner was the team of Mike Barber and Don Funicello with a net 64. And the Fourth Flight winner was the team of Mike Sasko and Keith Wenger with a net 63. Congratulations on all the great rounds and for making this tournament a great success with the excellent turnout. All of our first place teams earned $50 scrip for each player. The winners of the Closest To Pin holes were Rick Beall on #4 at 2’ 7”, Jeff Traweek on #7 at 2’ 4” and Dub Wood on #8 (second shot) at 1’ 8”. It’s always surprising when our winner on #7 has a closer shot than the winner on #4. Great shot Jeff! Each first place winner won $35 in Scrip. I apologize that we have no photos for the Newsletter, but I was not able to make the tourney as I was a bit under the weather so to speak. Next month I’ll try to take some extra pictures. 1ST FLIGHT 2ND FLIGHT 3RD FLIGHT 4TH FLIGHT 1st Place - $50 1st Place - $50 1st Place - $50 1st Place - $50 Terry Doan Wally Hieronimus Mike Barber Mike Sasko Jeff Traweek Dan Chancellor Don Funicello Keith Wenger 60 61 64 63 2nd Place – $35 2nd Place – $35 2nd Place – $35 2nd Place – $35 Dan Walter Bryan Fontana Rod Kahele Greg Emerson Bill Beebe Kevin Fontana Jeff Duran Don Garner 65 62 65 66 3rd Place- $20 3rd Place- $20 3rd Place- $20 3rd Place- $20 Allen Pierce Mike Miller Phil Collins Larry Risser Dale Hanstein Lonnie Cullati Matt Croddy Ray Session 66 67 66 67 Page 1 BLACK OAK MEN’S CLUB JANUARY 2016 The Closest To Pin Winners #4 $ $ #7 1ST PLACE Rick Beall 2’ 7” 35 35 Jeff Traweek 2’ 4” 2ND PLACE Mike Barber 3’ 9” 30 30 Mike Barber 4’ 4” 3RD PLACE Allen Pierce 6’ 8” 25 25 Wally Hieronimus 20’ 0” 4TH PLACE Ray Session 8’ 5” 20 5TH PLACE Lonnie Cullati 9’ 2” 15 # 8 Second Shot $ 1ST PLACE Dub Wood 1’ 8” 35 2ND PLACE Kevin Fontana 7’ 2” 30 3RD PLACE Jeff Traweek 9’ 7” 25 THIS Saturday’S Tournament February 13 8:30 Shotgun Start Modified devil ball 3-man Best Ball Tournament Format Our Modified Devil Ball format is kind of a misnomer. It’s really a four man rotating two best ball. The Devil Ball cannot be lost and out of play and we won’t be using a specially colored or marked ball as done in a typical Devil Ball format. Each player will play his own ball. Two net scores per hole will count. One player will be designated on each hole as the “Devil Ball” and will rotate throughout the round. The “Devil Ball” score will count as one of the team’s two score total for the hole. The other will be the best score of the other 3 players. The “Devil Ball” player must always complete the hole. If one of the other three players has an exceptionally bad score going on a hole, it is suggested in the interest of fast play, you pick up and X out the hole with the score you most likely would have scored if you finished the hole. The 4 players will take turns having the "Devil Ball" role. Please note that the tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. Page 2 BLACK OAK MEN’S CLUB Next MONTH’S Tournament Saturday MARCH 12 8:30 Shotgun Start Two-Man Alternate Shot JANUARY 2016 Tournament Format Our March tournament is a modified 2-man alternate shot format. Each team member will tee off on each hole. The two players then determine which tee shot they want to use. If player A’s tee shot is selected, player B takes the next shot. Players then take alternate turns hitting until the ball is holed. If a player’s ball is thought to be hit out of bounds or lost, the other player hits the provisional ball shot. If the ball is located in play, the player who hit the provisional ball would take the next shot with the original ball. The handicap is determined by taking an average of the two players’ handicaps. Handicap strokes on each hole will be denoted by dots an your score card. It is not necessary to calculate your net score, just write in your gross score for each hole. Please note that the tournament will start at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday Sweeps News: For those who are not aware, Norm provides a free lunch on the first Wednesday of each month. This past Wednesday we had 35 Players which is a nice showing. However, we would like to get the participation back up like is was a number of years ago when we used to have a full field. Right now instead of a shot gun start, we scheduling tee time from 7:40 until 9:00. Page 3
