number.

Two players
Materials
• standard deck of cards with face cards removed
How to play
Red cards are negative numbers; black cards are positive numbers. The cards are shuffled and
dealt facedown bet ween the players. (Players take turns being the dealer.) Players stack their
cards facedown.
Players turn over their top card at the same time. Players verbalize their integers Lo ec1cl1 ull1er.
The player with the greater number takes both cards.
Example
Player 1 draws a 5 of hearts and says, "I have a negative five." Player 2 draws a 3 of spades and
says, "I have a positive three." Player 2 takes both cards.
In the event of a tie, players turn over another card and put it on top of their first card. The player
with the greater number takes all four cards.
Play continues until the facedown cards have all been used. Players count their accumulated
cards, and the player with more cards wins the game.

• How did you decide which player had the greater number?
• Prove to me that +5 is greater than -7.
Variation 1: The game is played the same way, but the player with the lesser integer takes
the cards.
Variation 2: "Integer Addition" is played in a similar manner, but each player turns over two
cards and adds the integers together. The player with the greater integer sum takes
all the cards.
