Assignment title
Features that contribute to the appeal of destinations
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Be able to understand how factors can affect travel to long-haul destinations
Scenario
The tour operator you are working for has asked that you undertake research on a chosen
destination which will feature in next year’s brochure highlighting features that contribute to its
appeal to UK holidaymakers.
Task 3a
They have asked you to produce a powerpoint presentation on your chosen destination that
describes the features and facilities that contribute to its appeal as a long-haul destination. You
need to provide information that will then be used to produce copy that will be included within the
brochures content.
What do I need to do to successfully complete task 3a?
You need to take account of the features and facilities that will appeal to both business and leisure
Customers.
Your fact file needs to include the following sections:Accessibility: methods of transport e.g. air, cruise; availability and frequency; travelling time; cost;
suitability for the traveller e.g. classes available, facilities provided; convenience e.g. direct flights.
You must include methods of transportation in your destination too as well as getting there.
Attractions: natural e.g. mountains, beaches, lakes; built e.g. theme parks, historical buildings,
monuments, art galleries; events e.g. carnivals, sports, music; shopping e.g. markets, famous stores;
cultural e..g religion and traditions
Destination facilities: local transport; accommodation (range, cost); other e.g. sport,
entertainment, food and drink
Climate: positive features e.g. sun, snow; negative features e.g. humidity, extreme weather
Types of visitors (from the UK): leisure e.g. families, couples, gap-year travellers, VFR; business;
other e.g. educational, medical, volunteers
(P4)
Task 3b.
You need to write a report to accompany your presentation that assesses the significance of the key
features that influence the appeal of your chosen destination.
What do I need to do to successfully complete task 3b?
You need to assess the significance of different factors and facilities of your chosen destination with
the different customer types that would visit. It would be particularly good practice to find some
statistics about the different visitor types and numbers who visit the destination to support your
findings.
(M2)
Task 3c
Your tour operator is anxious to promote your destination to as wide a potential market a s
possible. Now that you know who the tourists are that visit your destination, you have been asked
to evaluate how the destination could capitalise on its facilities in order to influence its future
development. This will be an additional section in your report for Task 3b above.
What do I need to do to successfully complete task 3c?
In order to pass D2, you should now make specific justified suggestions on how your destination
can change and evaluate how it has capitalised on its features and developed its facilities etc. to
attract different customer types. You should produce a set of detailed notes that outline your ideas
and these will then be used in the form of a discussion that you will hold with the Head of
Marketing of your tour operator. You will find it useful to described planned development in your
destination to show how they are trying to further increase visitors to the destination.
