Rockets shutout Wayne for first win of season By: Richard Anderkin The Rockcastle County High School Rocket football team defeated Wayne County on Friday night, 34-0 for their first win of the 2009 season. Rockcastle head coach Scott Parkey said he was pleased with his team’s over all effort and especially the defensive unit, which allowed only 154 yards. Parkey also said he was pleased with the fact that his offensive unit captilized on several turnovers by the Cardinals which resulted in touchdowns. The second year head coach said he was also pleased with the effort of the special teams. “Overall it was a really good team effort, something we need to duplicate each week as the season progresses,” he said. The Rocket scoring on Friday night went as follows: In the first quarter, Jamie Todd scored on a 39 yard pass from Dustin Bishop and Bishop added the extra point to give the Rockets a 7-0 lead. The score was the result of a 11 play 88 yard drive. Also in the first quater, junior fullback John L. Saylor scored on a 34 yard run. The extra point was no good, but the Rockets had a 13-0 lead, after the score which covered 71 yards on 6 plays. In the second period, Bishop (Cont. to A13 The RCHS girls' cross-country team won their first meet of the season at Lincoln County High School this past Saturday. Senior Laura Dollins led the way for RCHS with a 3rd place finish overall. Seniors Deana Gabbard and Molly Coffey placed 4th and 5th. At a recent cross-country meet hosted by Lincoln County, the RCMS 6th grade and under team was led by sixth grader Summer King who placed 2nd overall, sixth grader Tori Phillips who finished 3rd, and fifth grader Maggie Franklin who placed 6th. Senior Cole Abney sacked the Wayne County quarterback on Friday night as the Rockets won their first game of the season, leveling their record at 1-1. The Rocket defense gave up only 154 total yards on the night. RCHS sophomore Clark Rowe scored on this 32 yard run in the third quarter. Rowe led the Rockets in rushing with 181 yards on 20 carries. RCHS football defensive coordinator Josh Martin talked to his team during a time-out on Friday night. Martin’s defensive unit held the Cardinals to no points. Rockcastle County High School senior volleyball player Natalie Harrman, attempts to return a serve in game one of the Lady Rocket’s match with Pulaski County on Tuesday night. The Lady Rockets dropped their fifth match of the season 2-1 to the Lady Maroons. Also in the photo is #25 senior Bethany Clontz and #14 Beth Guinn.
