Our Boys are Double All
Ireland Champions:
The All Ireland Juvenile Relay Championships were held
in Tullamore, Co Offaly last Saturday. GloHeath sponsored their first National AAI Juvenile event as the top
provincial relay teams battled it out for All Ireland medals. Our boys U12 relay which consisted of Nathan Cremin, Oisin Enright, Ciaran O’Sullivan, Patrick Ambrose
and Shane Fitzgerald were our only relay team on the
day and our hopes were high as these boys were already
crowned All Ireland Indoor Champions in March this
year in Athlone. They also were clear winners from the
Munster qualifiers. They won their heat comfortably on
Saturday afternoon to see them in lane 3 for the final.
The boys didn’t disappoint with slick baton changes and a
fantastic speedy time of 55.24 (just missing out on the
National record of 54.17) to take the National title. A
fitting reward for the boys who have been together for
three years. Thanks to all for making the journey to Tullamore and supporting the boys in their great achievement.
U12 boys relay 4th plac: Patrick Johnson, Mark Hogan,
Sean Mulcahy, Micheal Brennan and Adam Hickey.

Limerick Youth Service
Against Cyberbullying
‘Instil a sense of caution not fear’ was one of the many
recommendations at an Information Evening on Cyberbullying & Social Media hosted by Limerick County Comhairle
na nÓg and Limerick Youth Service at the Woodlands Hotel, Adare on Wednesday June 25th.
Guest speaker, Dr. Griffin, UCC, discussed use of social media sites such as Facebook and SnapChat as well as the effects of cyberbullying via text and online while members of
Comhairle na nÓg performed Rock Me, a self-penned song
about the effects of cyberbullying.
Addressing the audience of adults and teenagers, Dr. Griffin said, ‘The idea of this evening is not to scare you into
closing down your Facebook accounts, rather make you
aware of the consequences of some of your actions.’
Although the majority of people who use sites such as Facebook and YouTube do so in a safe manner, there are
some vulnerable youngsters for whom the web can be a
very lonely and unsafe place.
Dr. Griffin also discussed the growing issue of ‘Facebook
Depression’ where people are presenting the signs of being
clinically depressed.
‘There are some people who spend so much time on Facebook that they start to judge their own life from one they
see online,’ said Dr. Griffin.
With some people having several hundred ‘Facebook
friends,’ Dr. Griffin asked the question, ‘Would you class
someone you just met in school or at a party as a friend in
real life?’
‘By making someone a friend on Facebook you are inviting
them into your life,’ continued Dr. Griffin before asking all
in attendance, ‘Would you invite a stranger into your
home, share photos and some of the most intimate details
of your life with them?’
Dr. Griffin, a leading voice in internet safety, stated that
‘Just as we aim protect young people in life, we should protect them on the web.’
‘From the moment our children are born we look after
them, teaching them the safe cross code - yet the internet
is thrown at them without rules or guidelines,’ continued
the UCC based lecturer.
The evening also saw a performance of Rock Me, an anticyberbullying song written by members of Limerick County
Comhairle that gives insight into the impact of cyberbullying on a young person’s wellbeing.
‘We decided to write a song that young people could relate
to, that highlighted the impact of cyberbullying on a person’s life but also showed that hope is there,’ said Keely
Bourke (15), Limerick County Comhairle na nÓg.
‘With cyberbullying an everyday issue for many young
people we (Comhairle na nÓg) have been very active in
raising awareness of the topic and highlighting ways in
which we can stamp it out,’ continued Keely.
‘Cyberbullying affects us all and people need to know
that online harassment can have an offline impact,’
stated Keely adding that, ‘We need to say Ctrl+Alt+Del
to cyberbullying.’
To hear the thought provoking song please visit

If you are concerned about cyberbullying, please speak
to someone. SpunOut.ie is one of the many online
sites that offer support while the Samaritans are available 24/7 at Freephone 123 116.
Limerick Youth Service wishes to thank all who attended the Information Evening, Dr. Griffin for her excellent
workshop and particularly the young people from
Comhairle na nÓg who went above and beyond in making the evening possible.
Limerick County Comhairle na nÓg is one 34 nationwide Comhairlí that provides a forum for young people
to discuss local and national issues of relevance to
them.
A member of Youth Work Ireland, Limerick Youth Service facilitates Limerick’s two Comhairlí and remains
committed to supporting and encouraging young people to be active participants in shaping their futures.
