Sony 3D Technology Center (“3DTC”) Launch
The 3DTC Project was announced in January 2010 and the facility opened in
March 2010 with initial objectives to:
•
•
•
•
•
Become the industry’s most credible source for 3D technology, education and training
Provide workshops to the industry
Advance the development of high-quality 3D in the industry
Support Sony hardware with high quality 3D materials
Establish and build industry relationships
The 3DTC has received substantial interest and support from all of the major
Hollywood studios, television and broadcast companies.
Workshops and curricula have been created for the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Cinematography Training
Film & Television Director Training
Live Events Camera Operator and Producer Training
Film & Television Production & Post-Production Training
Game Developer Training
Visual Effects Supervisor Training
3D Project – “3D world Created by Sony”
Since the Launch
Reach
•
Over 650 industry professionals have attended classes given by the 3DTC. The
3DTC has taken the workshop to the UK in partnership with the BBC, and will shortly
begin training in Mexico City.
•
3D presentations have been given to approximately 2000 people at different industry
functions.
Press
•
Extensive press coverage by many trade publications (i.e. CNN, NHK, Wall Street
Journal, Business Week, Daily Variety, The Economist, The Financial Times, etc)
firmly secured Sony’s leadership in this area
Result
•
Success of the 3DTC’s training program established Sony’s technical credibility and
has led to extensive collaboration on projects for both SPE and non-SPE entities.
 Currently consulting with over twenty top directors in Hollywood who are
launching 3D projects
 As applicable, the 3DTC has billed both SPE and non-SPE projects for services
rendered to help recoup operating costs (e.g. Michael Jackson & Green Hornet)
Next Steps
•
•
The 3DTC and SPE are working closely with 3DNet in developing technical
resources, tool sets and hardware to assist in the creation of 3D content.
Determine how to leverage the resource on a sustainable basis

Discussion Points
Revised Budget
•
The 3DTC training program has been extended beyond its original budget timeframe
due to extraordinary demand from both internal as well as external professionals
and will require supplementary funding to continue through March 31.
Scope
•
Need to clarify engagement parameters for the 3DTC as the scope of both SPE and
non-SPE requests has far exceeded original expectations; The 3DTC’s potential for
involvement in production and consultation goes beyond the initial objectives and
capacity of the current infrastructure.
Next Steps
•
Create 3D BD training materials and provide training/internship programs at the
3DTC to enable global 3DTC satellite training opportunities (Japan, U.K., China,
India, etc)
•
Need to consider a revised charter that (1) establishes concrete objectives
consistent with Sony's 3D vision, (2) provides adequate funding mechanisms to
achieve the desired results and (3) minimizes future funding requirements.

3D Content Strategy Proposal
Multiple Units in Sony are seeking to increase the amount of high quality content
available in the market
•
There is a distinction between content as a commodity to sell hardware at retail
and premium monetizable content (e.g. alternative content for Cinema)
•
The 3DTC is a resource and will attempt to support when possible
•
A proactive Sony United approach to premium content would maximize Sony’s
advantage from extensive knowledge of good 3D production
REQUEST: Additional meeting with appropriate senior management during STEF/
Management Conf week to discuss the following:
•
Coordinated business proposal to consider and establish a premium monetizable
content strategy with measurable KPI targets
•
Cross functional organization with clear governance structure and business group
ownership to promote accountability
•
Coverage area: US/EU region to start, other regions TBD
•
Target: 3D broadcast/satellite channels (3DNet, Sky, DirecTV, etc), VOD
(PSN/Qriocity, etc), alternative content market, physical disc distribution via BD,
etc
