ABOUT US

ABOUT US
At Wagner Road Early Childhood, we
believe that children learn best in
an environment that values play and
sees children as central to all
learning
We aim to promote both educational
and
recreational
opportunities
where
children
and
educators
together
create
occasions
for
learning.
We encourage children to think
imaginatively and creatively and to
actively
explore,
investigate,
experiment and discover the endless
possibilities.
We aim to create an environment
where children feel a sense of
belonging, are valued for their
uniqueness and are respected and
cared for.
PHILOSOPHY

To
stimulate
the
child’s
natural desire to learn.

To support the child’s growth
and learning in a range of
developmental areas.

To embrace the rights of all
children to be cared for in an
environment
that
engenders
peace, dignity, tolerance and
equality.

To
fostering
meaningful
relationships
with
families
and the community.

To develop an environment that
is
warm,
secure
and
supportive,
and
encourages
parental involvement.

To have fun!!
We are strongly committed to the
belief that the early years are
critical in laying the foundations
for success in life and learning.
OUR CURRICULUM
As
we
believe
that
children
learn
through play we run a child responsive
program that we feel fosters the total
and
appropriate
development
of
the
child. We believe it is the experience
the child has whilst engaging in play
that
is
the
important
factor
in
promoting development.
The product of
these play experiences i.e. painting,
block building, collage, etc. is of
secondary importance.
We believe that
it is the process not the product that
provides learning.
In this type of
programme equipment is a tool to enable
the child to explore their learning.
Some children will only work a few times
at a certain type of equipment before
they are ready to move onto something
else – others will need or want to spend
more time with it.
A child responsive
programme can enable this to happen.
Children
can
learn
at
their
own
individual rate.
The daily program
includes creative activities such as
painting, pasting, music, stories and
language experiences combined with free
play in and out of doors.

HISTORY
Established in 1942 to provide muchneeded assistance to Clayfield families
with serving members in the forces, the
Clayfield Childcare Centre became a
loved and respected friend.
Originally housed in St Colomb’s Hall
Sandgate Road and staffed by a trained
nursing sister and an army of voluntary
mothers rostered to wash nappies. The
Centre’s history reflected the changing
role of women and childcare in our
society.
Being one of the first centres in
Brisbane to open five days a week, it
was regarded as the leading childcare
service in the area. In its first three
years, the childcare centre cared for
over 6,000 children, resulting in the
demand for a Kindergarten that was
opened in 1944.
Due to increasing numbers and lack of
space, the childcare centre moved to the
School of Arts building in Wagner Road
1999 the Centre, which had been
Yellow In
Room
lovingly
referred to as “Waggie Road”
Red Room
was
renamed
the Wagner Road Early
Rainbow Room
Childhood Centre.
Currently caring for 170 children over
a five-day period, the Association can
boast
having
cared
for
three
generations of some local families
with a core of long-standing staff
managed by a committee of parents.
The facility is owned by The Clayfield
School
of
Arts
Trust
who
was
instrumental
in
setting
up
this
centre.
They continue to support our
centre today.
The Child Care Centre provides 40
places in the following ages and
number. Cost reflects the adult/child
ratio – All meals are included in the
daily rate.
CLAYFIELD CHILD CARE ASSOCIATION INC.
Wagner Road Early Childhood Centre is
managed by the Clayfield Childcare
Association Inc., which consists of
the parents of children enrolled at
the centre. This association elects a
small group of members to form a
committee, which is responsible for
the overall administration financing
and staffing of the Centre.
This is in essence what a community
Early Childhood Centre is all about
– parents having their say in their
children’s education.
