OIVA in a nutshell
OIVA
• Is a working method that promotes interaction in
communities
• Increases the equality of interaction
• Both partners can equally participate, make initiations and
have an effect on the interaction
• Focuses on positive moments of interaction
• Shows
• the strengths and abilities of the staff
• Inspires the staff to learn more about their interaction
• Brings joy and new meaning to nursing, guiding,
education…
OIVA is suitable for work
communities
that
• provide services to
people with complex
communication needs
• housing units
• day activity centres
• units of special
education
• are innovative and
motivated to develop
their communication
The OIVA Process in the
community
1. Community´s
OIVA plan and
agreement
2. Outset
3. OIVA work
4. Termination
5. Establishing OIVA culture
• OIVA lasts nine months
• The whole community participates (max. 6 members)
• The process is led and guided by OIVA guide
OIVA work
• Offers an opportunity for
regular discussion and
sharing experiences
• Contains six OIVA meetings
where the staff and OIVA
guide
• Examine the staff
members’ questions
• Observe and analyze the
video – find the answers
• Decide concrete aim for
the interaction
• Where, what and
who?
In OIVA
• The staff members play an active role
• They
• Film and observe their own work and interaction
• Recognize
• their own abilities as communication partners (LOVIT)
• the initiations and messages of their partners with complex
communication needs
• Focus on successful ways of communicating and discuss how
they will be used in new situations
• Discuss their thoughts and learn from each other
In OIVA
• The OIVA guide
• Leads the process towards the community’s OIVA
aim
• Selects short clips from the video
• Clips are related to the aim and the staff’s question
• Guides the discussion in a positive and
empowering way
• Gives space for the participant’s own insights
OIVA culture
• OIVA has permanent
impact on staff’s thinking
and performing
• The staff
• sees the interaction as
an essential content of
their work
• feels that they are more
skilled as
communication partners
• The whole perspective
changes into being more
client-oriented
OIVA aims at successful and sensitive interaction
• keys to successful and sensitive interaction are
summarized in five elements of competent
partner
• a competent partner
(1) is reciprocally present
(2) waits and gives time to initiate
(3) responds
(4) adjusts own expressions to meet the other
person’s communication needs and
(5) checks and makes sure that the interaction is
not cut off.
LOVIT® mnemonic
• the LOVIT® mnemonic was created of the first
letters of the Finnish key words describing the
elements.
• LOVIT makes it easier for the staff to keep the
most important things in mind

• focus on the situation
• are peaceful
• take your time
• share closeness
• are at the same level
• maintain eye contact
• participate in his / her
activities
• use friendly intonation and
positive utterances
Waiting and giving time
means that you
• are still
• pause your own action
• turn towards your partner
• use facial expressions which
encourage him / her to take
part in communication
• use encouraging smile or nod
• touch him / her
• give time for his / her answer
Responding
means that you
• recognize his / her
initiatives
• respond to his / her
utterances
• fulfill his / her needs
• imitate his / her
expressions
• interpret his / her
expressions through your
own words or gestures
Adjusting own expressions
means that you
• use his / her language
• AAC if needed
• use simple and clear
utterances
• use short sentences and say
one thing at a time
• repeat your expression if
needed
• use prosody to enforce the
informational and emotional
content
Checking
means that you
• check whether you have
contact with him / her and
he / she is still willing to
continue the interaction
• ensure you have
understood him / her
• observe how well he / she
understands you
