8 Laundry: A typical washing machine uses 65 litres of water to wash clothes – and often we are not ‘clothes efficient’ because most families have a washing machine at home and therefore it is easy to wash our clothes. This is one reason that we now use twice as much water at home as 25 years ago. Challenge yourself to wear things more than once (apart from your underwear!) and only put your clothes out for washing when they are really dirty/smelly. Can you persuade everyone in your family to take up the challenge? How many loads of washing can you save every week/month? 10 9 Collect 10 litres for every load of washing your family saves per week/month Water Supply Challenge Game: Using the poster, learn all about the challenges of planning and building your own water pipe network by playing the Water Supply Challenge Game. Working as a team, decide on your route and then tackle the problems of leaking pipes, environmental concerns and customer issues. All in a day’s work for a water company! The better your responses the more water litres you can win for your team. (See the instructions pages 17 - 18 and the poster.) 5 Collect 5 litres for building your network Collect up to 9 bonus litres for answering the challenge questions 10 Gadgets: There are a number of different devices that you can install in your home to help you become more water efficient. These include shower heads designed to reduce the amount of water you use when showering; tap inserts that mix air with the water to give the same washing effect with less water; and hose triggers that automatically shut off the water when the hose is not in use. Follow this link www.savewatersavemoney.co.uk/girlguiding and check out what free devices are available from your local water company, order and install them in your home. Encourage your friends and family to install devices as well. 5 Collect 5 litres for every water saving device you, or your family and friends, install at home PA Use a bowl when you wash food/vegetables. That way you will use less water, and you can use the water in the bowl to water the plants in the garden. G E 6 challenge acti Wat vities er ef ficiency Use a bowl when you do the washing up. As well as saving water, you will also save the energy used to heat the hot water for the washing up. WATER BOTTLE JACKET You will need: • 1 litre drinks bottle • An old sock – any colour (check that it fits snuggly over your chosen water bottle, and it is not too loose or too tight) • Needle and cotton or fabric glue • Decorative craft items such as sequins, ribbons, felt, wool etc Instructions 1. Cut off the foot end of the sock just above the heel, so you have a stretchy tube. 2. Turn the sock tube inside out and sew or glue the cut end into a hem to stop the sock unravelling. 3. Turn the sock tube the right way out, and then decorate (it is better to sew the decorations onto the sock tube so that they stay on when the jacket is stretched over your water bottle). 4. Once your jacket is finished, pull it onto your bottle for instant style. PA Send us a photo of your finished jackets so we can put them on the website.
