“These SE Londoners remind everyone what punk-rock is supposed to sound like” Artrocker, April 2008.
“The modern world isn’t full of spectators. People have gone from consumers to co-creators; It’s a conversation rather than a
lecture. It’s not about one-upmanship either; people aren’t saying, “Look at what I can do, I can do something better than you.”
It’s like, “Look at what I can do, how does that make you want to do something?” It’s not about competition; it’s about
community. I just love it man, it’s what I live for.”
Rich, The Rank Deluxe quoted in ‘The New Cross Code’, Time Out London, January 2007.
“Anger is an energy…”, PiL ‘Rise’, 1986
“You’ve got what you want/ But do you want what you’ve got?” ‘They Don’t Matter’, The Rank Deluxe 2008
The Rank Deluxe release their debut album ‘You Decide’ through Fat Cat, June 2008.
The original trio of raw and explosive AA singles, ‘Doll Queue’, ‘Style’ & ‘Poorman’s Cab’ - that introduced them in
summer ’06 threw The Rank Deluxe into sharp relief in the UK music scene: NME found itself witnessing ‘the rowdiest,
angriest punk-rock explosion in the capital’, Uncut describing their set-closer ‘Style’ as a ‘thug-rock masterpiece’
while John Kennedy at Xfm made every release a Single Of The Week. 2007 in contrast was largely spent writing
and recording, putting together their incendiary debut with producer Mark Rankin (Kate Nash, Adem) in London’s
Miloco studios.
At war with themselves and in thrall to no-one – SE London based The Rank Deluxe are a melting pot of forcefully
expressed ideas with sharp musical and intellectual teeth - not to mention an axe to grind. A furious car-crash of
punk-rock, reggae, rocksteady and psychedelia, ‘You Decide’ is as startling for it’s tunes as the band’s instinctive,
intuitive knack for aligning musical and social commentaries that similarly characterized bands like The Specials, Ian
Dury or Gang of Four in the late ‘70s and early ‘80’s. Growing up together on SE London’s notorious Thamesmead
estate, many of Rich & Lewis’ formative experiences have ultimately informed much of The Rank Deluxe debut. The
song titles speak volumes – ‘Straightjacket’, ‘Tight-Rope’, ‘Even No-One Can Be Someone’ - all about the
precarious nature of the band’s own internal politic, and the world that spewed them out.
The album title itself is also reference to the paradox of the modern world; the idea that with unlimited options
comes a fear of choice and ultimately stasis – the unhappy fear of being left behind, of living in the world of the
missed opportunity, haunted by the idea that you could have made a better decision. With infinite choice you can
never know if you are making the right decision – hence, many will assume they made the wrong decision and
never be happy with their choice. The Rank Deluxe are in effect saying, authenticate yourself; that way every
choice you make will be right for you.
The Rank Deluxe is: Richard Buchanan on Lead Vocals & Guitar, Lewis Dyer on Lead Guitar & Vocals, John Wallis on
Bass, and Chris Ballard on Drums.
