1. Team Astral, UPES triumphs at CanSat Competition 2016, USA
Team Astral grabbed first position in Europe and Asia and fourth position globally at CanSat
Competition 2016. Team Astral comprises of students from Aerospace Engineering, Mechatronics
Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Computer Science
Engineering and Design Studies . 73 teams from across the world participated in the competition
this year, held at Burkett, Texas, USA. UPES competed with many prestigious universities including
University of California, Princeton University, Manchester University, University of Alabama
Huntsville and Carleton University.
2. UPES Team emerges Winner of Aerospace giant Lockheed Martin design
challenge
UPES team Tesseract emerges winner of the Lockheed Martin Roll-On-Roll-Off competition
launched in 2014. At a glittering award ceremony of C130J Super Hercules Aircraft Roll on/ Roll
Off Universtiy Design Challenge, held on 8th March 2016 at India Habitat Center in New Delhi, the
UPES team was awarded a grant of $40,000 to develop prototype of the module. Now, Lockheed
Martin will work with UPES team to explore options with government and industry to explore
mature prototype for the global markets. This team will develop prototypes of their modules and
a go-to-market strategy with Tata Advance System Limited– Hyderabad.
The five teams from the prestigious Universities across India who were shortlisted for phase two
were tasked to present their High Level Design (i.e. Roll On / Roll Off System) for the C-130 J Super
Hercules Payload. Followed with this were the presentations, to evaluate them on the Technical
Readiness Level (TRL) along with the market feasibility. “The teams were evaluated based on their
Technical / Conceptual Design, Value to the Mission and Cost / Benefit, and now our team has
successfully prototype phase of this challenge,” said Dr. Sudhir Joshi, faculty UPES and PrincipalInvestigator- Roll-on/Roll-off (RO/RO). The other team who wins this award as co-winner was IIT
Madras. Among notable teams who could not make for this phototype phase was IIT Delhi and
BITS Goa.
Launched in November 2014, the Lockheed Martin C-130J Roll-On/Roll-Off University Design
Challenge provided research grants for each university team to work with local industry partners
and mentors from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The objective of the
challenge was to develop design specifications for proposed modules that could be used on a
Lockheed MartinC-130J Super Hercules cargo aircraft. It is believed that the proposed capabilities
presented by winning teams (including UPES team) in this competition are expected to increase
efficiency and effectiveness of future disaster relief operations supported by C-130J aircraft.
Since 2007, Lockheed Martin has been successfully running the India Innovation Growth Program
in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology, Indo-US Science and Technology
Forum, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Stanford Graduate School of
Business and the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas.
3. UPES ACM Student Chapter wins Excellence Award and $500
The UPES ACM Student Chapter won the 2015-2016 Student Chapter Excellence Award for
Outstanding Recruitment Program worldwide, with prize money of $500. This Chapter has
represented UPES internationally and recognized as winners from almost 1000+ ACM student
chapters across the world.
4. UPES Students win the title prize of "Best Android App," at the Michigan
State University, USA
Rosy and Shubham, students of UPES B. Tech. Computer Science and Engineering course
win the title prize of "Best Android App" and a cash prize of $400 for the project
"Intellivision” at the SpartaHack 2016, an official annual hackathon of Michigan State
University, USA.
There were 114 projects presented at the end of 36-hour hackathon. This team was
comprised of 4 members including them and two more students from DePauw University
and University of Illinois from USA. This team submitted their project and won the award
for the title prize. The project Intellivision is a live augmented reality image tagging
android application using Google Glass and MYO band.
5. UPES students team enters top 5 of the prestigious Global Shell Ideas360
A team of two students Krishna Chaturvedi and Priya Sihag from B Tech Applied
Petroleum Engineering Upstream, UPES has made the country proud with their innovative
idea Fire in Ice: Fuel for the Future. This team participated in the final competition at
prestigious Global Shell Ideas 360 at Amsterdam. The Fire in Ice: Fuel for the Future
project implemented under the mentorship of Andrew Tan presents an innovative,
promising and sustainable source of energy for the future via the injection of carbondioxide in hydrate reservoirs to produce methane gas. The microbial action on Carbon
dioxide in reservoir to convert it to methane via methanogenesis (procedure of microbial
action) and reformation of a methane gas hydrate, forming a complete cycle and
providing an ever-lasting source of energy was the concept of the idea.
6. Outstanding achievement in Engineering by Amit Panwar – an alumnus!
Doing the Masters’ thesis is a huge accomplishment and further getting it accepted by the
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is a great honor. This is what Amit
Panwar, who have been UPES B.Tech ADE student (2005 – 09 Batch), accomplished
pursuing Masters’ of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from University of Alberta,
USA.
Amit’s research shows how using temperature data and production data together
improve overall recovery from a stream – assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) reservoirs.
Besides being accepted by ASME his research has been nominated for an “Award Quality”
entry for outstanding contribution in engineering.
7. UPES Student Chapter receives ‘Outstanding Award’ twice in a row at
Texas, USA
Once again, UPES- Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) Student Chapter, Youngest
Chapter in the region won the “Outstanding Chapter Award -2015” at Houston, Texas,
USA. On behalf of the Chapter, Aamir Aamir Lokhandwala, the student and president of
the UPES SPE Chapter (2014) received the trophy at the Annual Technical Conference &
Exhibition [ATCE 15] on 28th - 30th September 2015. The award was presented by Mr.
Nathan Meehan, President of SPE International. The ‘Outstanding Award’ is the highest
honor for any Student Chapter, given by SPE International. UPES Chapter is the youngest
Chapter in the region to have won the Outstanding Chapter Award twice in a row.
Before this, the Chapter has already achieved the rare distinction by being awarded the
Gold Standard Award for three successive years (2011, 2012 & 2013). The Gold Standard
is an exceptional standard for performance in categories of membership, planning,
education, professionalism, service, support, and fundraising. The SPE Student Chapter of
UPES is one of the internationally acclaimed SPE Chapters around the globe.
