Dear Parent/Carer,
Parent and Carer Survey
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MH88PFP
Please click on the link above to give us your views about different aspects of the school.
Some of you have had the opportunity to complete the survey during parent consultations,
however the weak wi-fi connection has made it problematic and therefore we are providing
the link to ensure everyone has the opportunity to respond. We do value all feedback!
Parent Consultations/Book Fair/Bake Sale/Christmas Cards & Mugs!
Thank you to everyone who turned out to discuss their child’s learning with their class
teacher this week. If for any reason you weren’t able to come, please get in touch and we
can arrange another time. The Book Fair and Bake Sale have both proved to be popular and
busy stalls and a particular thank you to the volunteers P7 and parents who have run these.
Thanks also to Virve Phillips for arranging the Christmas cards and mugs, a hugely
successful venture!
Achievements and Highlights
The P5 classes have all enjoyed a visit to Holyrood House this week. Learning about the
past through one of our local landmarks has proved to be a fascinating and engaging topic
providing much discussion.
P7 have enjoyed creating balloon powered vehicles this week with lots of problem solving
skills on display. They have also enjoyed working with Edinburgh University Maths students
who have helped them to see maths in an interesting and creative light.
P6 took part in the Pizza Challenge, which provided a first taste of the new Portobello High
School as part of the beginning of their transition work. They have also engaged in an
interesting and innovative piece of learning with the Museum of Childhood helping to provide
their perspective on items from the past and how opinions change. It also provided an
opportunity to build on their Show Racism the Red Card work.
P4 had great fun creating and performing musical raps with the help of Edinburgh University
Music students over two workshop sessions.
P1-3 had a Magic Show on Thursday to highlight the importance of road safety. Look out for
the children sharing top tips they’ve picked up from the show!
We were delighted to welcome Martin Kalula, who is on study leave from his school in
Tanzania, back into the school to meet with the pupil Twende Pamoja Group. Both Sambarai
and Parsons Green are looking forward to establishing curricular links to share our learning
with each other.
Thank you to the parents who were able to come along to the P1 literacy/numeracy chat, we
hope you found it useful.
JRSO Competition Time – Assembly on Thursday 24th Nov.
The Junior Road Safety Officers announced two competitions – one to design a cycle
helmet, the other to dress up in your brightest clothing for the Assembly next week – Be
Bright, Be Seen is the theme – wear your neon, fluorescent and reflective items!
Parent Council/ Christmas Fair
Thank you to everyone who attended the Parent Council on Tuesday evening. Next meeting
is in January.
Career Fair as part of World of Work Week
We are planning to have a ‘World of Work Week’ in the new term and would be keen for any
parents who would like to share the skills they use in their job with the children. One option
will be to visit a class and do a short Q&A with the class, the other is to join our Career Fair
in the hall where the children will come to you and ask questions and perhaps engage with
any ‘props’ or leaflets you would like to bring along. The date for the Career Fair is Thursday
2nd February 1.30 – 3.20pm. Save the Date!
Christmas Fair – message from Parent Council
This week your child was issued with a book of raffle tickets for our Christmas Cash Raffle
for you to sell. The raffle will be drawn on Saturday 3rd December 2016 at the Christmas
Fair. Please could you return all tickets stubs and unsold raffle tickets to your child's class
teacher by Friday 25th November 2016 - all raffle ticket stubs and cash should be placed in
a sealed envelope and have clearly marked on the outside Christmas Raffle Tickets. Any
cheques should be made payable to Parsons Green Parent Council. Thank you.
Christmas Fair - message from Fair Committee
Thanks for all your offers of help, time and assistance for the fair on 3 December. It's much
appreciated. Please let the Christmas Fair Team know if you are able to help in any way.
1. Donation requests
As well as the fantastic donations from parents, the school is very lucky to
be exceptionally well supported by the local community receiving generous donations from
businesses. We've received many donations already but it would be great to get more. If
anyone is able to spare some time to ask for donations please do get in touch and we can
pass on the donations letter to you and let you know which businesses have already
donated and which businesses still need to be targeted.
2. Help decorating the hall
Please let us know if you can assist with decorating the hall for the Fair on either the
afternoon of Friday 2 December or the morning of 3 December. All help gratefully received.
3. Helpers on the day
We've a keen team of helpers for the day but if anyone else can help just let us know.
4. Finally, please remember to keep sending in your own donations to the school via the
janitor's office. We've received some great donations already. Please keep them rolling in.
In particular:
Toys; Chocolates and sweets; Books, DVDs, CDs; Bottles of any type; School uniforms;
Home baking; Christmas crafts
Thank you from,
The Christmas Fair team
Headlice
PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD’S HAIR! We have been made aware of continuing issues in
the school with headlice and would appreciate it if you could ensure that you are checking
your child’s hair regularly with a ‘nit’ comb, available from any local pharmacy.
