Proverbs 1:8-9
8 Hear,
my son, your father’s
instruction, and forsake not your
mother’s teaching, 9 for they are a
graceful garland for your head and
pendants for your neck.
Romans 13:11
11 Besides
this you know the time, that
the hour has come for you to wake
from sleep. For salvation is nearer to
us now than when we first believed.
Romans 13:12
12 The
night is far gone; the day is at
hand. So then let us cast off the
works of darkness and put on the
armor of light.
Romans 13:13
13 Let
us walk properly as in the daytime,
• not in orgies and drunkenness,
• not in sexual immorality and sensuality,
• not in quarreling and jealousy.
How do you stop walking these places?
Romans 13:14
14 But
put on the Lord Jesus Christ,
and make no provision for the flesh,
to gratify its desires.
How do I do this?
Colossians 3:1-5
1 If
then you have been raised with Christ, seek
the things that are above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your
minds on things that are above, not on
things that are on earth. 3 For you have died,
and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4
When Christ who is your life appears, then you
also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to
death therefore what is earthly in you:
sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil
desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
How do you kill sin?
1. Ruthless rejection of all your sin…
a) Don’t tapper off, contain, control, coddle, excuse,
blame others for, or play games with sin.
b) Confess it… Call your sin “sin”. James 5:16 and 1
John 1:9-10
2. Preach the gospel to yourself.
a) Sin assumes we don’t believe Christ will provide.
b) Law based motive to reject sin is not the gospel.
c) Gospel motive – Driven by Love…
“What have I done? What love, mercy,
what blood, what grace have I despised
and trampled upon? Is this the return I
make to the Father for his love, to the
Son for his blood, to the Spirit for his
grace? Do I thus requite (pay back) the
Lord? Have I defiled the heart that Christ
died to wash?... What can I say to the
dear Lord Jesus?... Do I account my
communion with him of so little value?...
Shall I endeavor to disappoint the very
purpose of the death of Christ?”
