Internship at ORTEC: Platoon Matching Algorithm

Internship at ORTEC: Platoon Matching Algorithm
A consortium of leading companies (including TNO, RSM, ORTEC, Havenbedrijf Rotterdam) has got
the approval from the NWO to investigate the opportunities of platooning in the Netherlands.
Platooning means that trucks drive very close behind each other, such that the second truck does not
need active driving (technically controlled by the first truck). Other advantage is that fuel consumption
is reduced for both trucks.
The goal of this research is: given a transportation schedule (with a set of routes):
1. Find possible candidates for platooning: an algorithm identifies possible candidates for platooning,
e.g., based on:
• Start (similar for end) locations of the two routes are close to each other
• They are driving in similar direction at the same time
2. Calculate the details of the opportunities (savings, common road). An algorithm computes the
overlap (high way exits) between two candidate routes for platooning.
This research will be done in close relationship with involved parties.
End result for usage will be made available in a “cloud” environment.
