PIPELINE HAT
Size: to fit 21 ½“ to 23“ [54 to 58 cm] head.
If you would like to crochet this hat, you will need
the following materials: Schachenmayr original Sun
City, 1 ball [50g] each #00226 bright orange, #00273
chartreuse, #00265 pool blue, #00134 cyclamen. 1 size
US 6-7 (4-4. 5 mm) crochet hook, tapestry needle.
You will need the following crochet techniques for
the hat:
Basic pattern A: In rounds, begin with chain 3 (counts
as first stitch), double crochet [UK = treble crochet]
in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch in top of
beginning-chain.
Basic pattern B: In rounds, work following the chart.
Begin each round as shown, work the pattern repeat 16
times around, join with a slip stitch in the top of beginningchain. Work rounds 6 and 7 once, then repeat rounds 8 and
9 for pattern.
Note: Round 5 is the last round of Basic Pattern A and is
shown to make setting up the first round of Basic Pattern
B easier.
Basic pattern C: In rounds, begin with chain 1 (counts as
first stitch), single crochet [UK = double crochet] in each
stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in the beginning-chain.
Note: When changing colors, work the chain at beginning
of round in the new color.
Gauge: in Basic pattern A, 15 stitches and 7-8 rounds = 4“
[10 cm]; in Basic pattern B, 3 pattern repeats and 11 rounds
= 4“[10 cm]; in Basic pattern C, 14 stitches and 16 rounds
= 4“ [10 cm].
Now you can get started! Follow these instructions:
With bright orange, chain 4, then join with a slip stitch to
form a ring. Continue in Basic pattern A as follows:
Round 1: Chain 3, work 9 double crochet around ring, join
with a slip stitch in top of beginning-chain = 10 stitches.
Round 2: Change to chartreuse, chain 3, work 1 double
crochet in same stitch as the chain, then 2 double crochet
in every stitch around, join with a slip stitch in top of the
beginning-chain = 20 stitches.
Round 3: Change to pool blue, chain 3, double crochet in
same st as the beginning-chain, *double crochet in next
stitch, 2 double crochet in next stitch; repeat from * to last
stitch, double crochet in last stitch, join with a slip stitch in
top of the beginning-chain = 30 stitches.
Round 4: Change to cyclamen, chain 3, double crochet
in next stitch, *2 double crochet in next stitch, 1 double
crochet in each of next 2 stitches; repeat from * to last
stitch, 2 double crochet in last stitch, join with a slip stitch
in top of the beginning-chain = 40 stitches.
Round 5: Change to bright orange, chain 3, double
crochet in each of next 2 stitches, *2 double crochet in
next stitch, double crochet in each of next 3 stitches;
repeat from * to last stitch, 2 double crochet in last stitch,
join with a slip stitch in top of the beginning chain = 50
stitches.
Continue in Basic pattern B, working 1 round in bright
orange, *2 rounds in chartreuse, 2 rounds in pool blue, 2
rounds in cyclamen, then 2 rounds in bright orange; repeat
from * once more. Work 2 more rounds in chartreuse, then
1 round in pool blue = 7 ¼“ [18.5 cm] in Basic pattern B.
Brim
Next (increase) round: Change to pool blue, chain 1,
*single crochet in next stitch, 2 single crochet in each of
next 4 stitches; repeat from * to end, join with a slip stitch
in the beginning-chain = 90 stitches.
Next round: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around,
join with a slip stitch in the beginning-chain. Repeat the
last round twice more.
Next round: Chain 1, work crab stitch (= single crochet
from left to right) around, join with a slip stitch in the
beginning-chain. Fasten off.
Weave in ends. Height of hat about
10 ⅝“ [27 cm].
