Main Cornerstone Programs 2016
EDITORIAL: Michael Eggleton
Mondays
While August was a busy month, September proved to be full of
important events. It would be fair to say Cornerstone has been
progressing through a season of change throughout this year. That
continued with the recent resignation of our Kitchen Manager
and Board member Gloria Anderson at the end of September.
Gloria has been with Cornerstone for more than ten years.
However this was something we were all aware of well in
advance so there were no surprises involved. In addition, we
unveiled a special plaque to commemorate the work of Ps. Don
Cameron at Cornerstone. And the Cornerstone Board finalised
their choices for the CEO position to three candidates.
Interviews were conducted at Cornerstone so once the final
decision is made we’ll be welcoming a new appointment.

Speaking of new people, Glenn Walker, a long time volunteer of
Cornerstone takes up the reins of the Kitchen Manager role.
You’ll likely hear Glenn before you see him and when you do see
him, you’ll notice him straightaway, as he’s quite tall and always
wearing a bandana :-) Glenn is a qualified chef and is looking
forward to making his mark in the Cornerstone Kitchen. I’ll
make sure we write a bit more about Glenn for next issue plus
provide a picture so you can put a face to the name, for those
who may not know him.
One of the important components of the Cornerstone ministry
is the social aspect we provide. People come not just to get a
meal but to have a place to go where they can chat and socialise
with others over a cup of tea or coffee. Some of our programs
cater specifically to that need providing opportunities to chat,
play a few games together, etc. One of the main attractions of
course is the Cornerstone pool table, which gets a thorough
work out during the week. As a result, it’s been looking a bit
worn of late, with some small tears in the felt surface. We were
able to find someone to take care of that though and the table is
looking pristine once again.
I’ve also included an article on another of our monthly
programs, the Sunday lunch, run by the Casey Seventh Day
Adventist Church. I hope you enjoy the read :-)
God’s grace be with you.

Goodbye Gloria :-)
After more than ten years of faithful service to
Cornerstone, our Kitchen Manager, Gloria
Anderson resigned at the end of September.
While Gloria was employed part-time by
Cornerstone, she did a tremendous amount of
additional voluntary work. Besides raising her
own two children, working at Cornerstone is
like having an additional extra large family to
consider. Besides ensuring a hearty and
nutritious lunch was served each Wednesday
and Friday, Gloria also took care of store
supplies, dealt with various maintenance issues
and even cleaned the toilets among a long list
of tasks. Things haven’t always gone smoothly and
there have been many difficult challenges to face
and personal trials to overcome, but Gloria has
persevered during those times. She has been of
immense help to me as I’ve settled in to my role at
Cornerstone also.
You’ll still be able to catch up with Gloria though
at the Doveton Baptist Church on Thursdays
where she will be doing the stone soup lunch
program. On behalf of all of Cornerstone, thanks
for everything you’ve done Gloria :-)

Celebrating Don’s Ministry
On the last Friday of
September Cornerstone
unveiled a special plaque
to commemorate the
work of Ps Don
Cameron. The event was
not just to remember the
impact Ps Don had on so
many lives, but also for
our Cornerstone patrons
to have something
special to remind them of Don. Estimates put the attendance around 160. Grant Renkema,
Cornerstone Board member, plus Councillor John Kelly shared a few words prior to the unveiling.
Special thanks go to John
Harraghy and the team
from Impact Steel who
prepared and installed the
plaque free of charge.
It will serve as a poignant
reminder of what we can
do when we are willing to
be used by the Lord to
accomplish His will.

Cornerstone Lunch
We often have students from Skills Plus in Dandenong come to help us at Cornerstone. Some of
them are shown in the photos below assisting with the serving of lunch next to our fine team of
volunteers. Once again the queues were long and the food went quickly.
As I mentioned in the editorial, we had someone help us out with our pool table. Bob (pictured
below) examined the table and replaced the felt for a very fair price. The job was completed in the
school holidays over a Monday and Tuesday, so there was no impact for our pool players (who start
the week on Tuesday afternoons). Bob also took away some of our pool cues for tip replacement
therapy (I’m told it’s painless ;-) and has offered to pop in several times a year to keep an eye on
how the table is fairing. Looking at the result, I’d say Bob did a fine job and all our players agree.

1st Sunday of the Month
Adam, William and Atta (pictured bottom
right) from the Casey Seventh Day Adventist
Church run a lunch on the first Sunday of
every month. From September they’ve also
began to do a lunch on the third Sunday of the
month as well, which is great news for those in
need of a meal on a Sunday. When I popped in
very early to see them at the beginning of the
month, the team was getting the food ready,
including a tasty looking range of pizzas and
pastries.
