Concert Tour of Japan and China (2-16 May 2015)

PRESS RELEASE
Warsaw, 28 April 2015
Sinfonia Varsovia in Asia
Concert Tour of Japan and China
2-16 May 2015
The Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra is embarking on a concert tour of Asia. It will play 17 concerts at
the La Folle Journée Festival in Japan and, for the first time in the history of the ensemble, the
Orchestra will play three concerts in China.
As became customary, at the turn of April and May Sinfonia Varsovia is travelling to Japan to play at that
country’s edition of La Folle Journée – the festival that popularises classical music. As every year, the first and
largest edition of the festival took place in France at the turn of January and February.
Each edition of La Folle Journée is programmed according to a certain theme. In 2014 the festival revolved
around American music. This year the main theme of the festival is “Passions of Heart and Soul”. Sinfonia
Varsovia’s concert programmes in Tokyo and Niigata include works by Bach, Viennese classical composers
Mozart and Beethoven, foremost representatives of the Romantic era: Chopin, Dvořák, Brahms and Grieg and
composers of the 20th century: Rodrigo, Britten and Marquez.
The Orchestra will be directed by young American conductor Robert Trevino, who has garnered warm praise
from critics and audience alike after Sinfonia Varsovia’s concert at the most recent Beethoven Festival in
Warsaw. Among the many soloists playing with the Orchestra in Japan are violinist Augustin Dumay and pianist
Yulianna Avdeeva.
It is worth noting that all of Sinfonia Varsovia’s concerts at the La Folle Journée Festival in Japan take place in
enormous concert halls. The one at the City Performing Arts Center in Niigata holds an audience of
approximately 2000, while the Tokyo International Forum more than 5000!
After 9 days and 17 concerts at the Japanese La Folle Journée, Sinfonia Varsovia flies to China, where it will
perform three concerts under the direction of Maestro Jerzy Maksymiuk. The artists will play in the most
prestigious concert hall in China: the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. The Orchestra will also
play at the Grand Theatre in Tianjin and at the Qintai Concert Hall in Wuhan. Concert programmes include
Serge Prokofiev’s Symphony No.1 Op.25 in D major “Classical” and works by Polish composers: Henryk Mikołaj
Górecki’s “Three Pieces in Old Style”, Andrzej Panufnik’s Violin Concerto with soloist Jakub Haufa and Fryderyk
Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2 Op.21 in F minor, interpreted by Paweł Wakarecy and famous Chinese pianist
Chen Sa.
Sinfonia Varsovia’s concert tour of China is an event held as part of the Polish season in China, organised jointly
by Culture.pl, The Polish Institute in Beijing, the Tianjin Grand Theatre, the National Center of Performing Arts
and Beijing Poly.
