Accessing
URGENT Care
at
BRMP
This guide will help you access the
correct healthcare and advice when
you or you child has an URGENT
medical problem.
If it is URGENT, ask to be put
on the DUTY DOCTOR’s list:
The Duty Doctor is available between
8.30am and 6.30pm Monday, Tuesday and
Friday, and 8.30m - 1.00pm on
Wednesday and Thursday to assess the
urgency of your healthcare need by
telephone.
The receptionist will need to ask you some
details about your problem; this enables
the GP to prioritise patients depending on
how sick they are.
The GP will review your message and will
call you back if it is something that needs
to be dealt with urgently.
Please make sure you stay by the
phone, keep your phone switched on
and make sure you give us the correct
contact number.
URGENT APPOINTMENTS
(same day appointment with
GP or Nurse)
We have a number of on the day
appointments available, but if
you call and there are no
appointments available and you
feel it is something that cannot
wait until the next available
appointment then CHOOSE one
of the following options:
If the GP feels he/she cannot assess you
or your child adequately over the phone
he/she will arrange for you to be seen in
the surgery. This may or may not be on the
same day (depending on the urgency of
the problem) and may be with a different
GP or nurse. If the appointment time the
GP offers to see you does not suit you
then he/she will direct you to one of the
local Walk-In Centres where you can walk
in and see a Health Professional.
Outside of these Duty Doctor hours you
can still contact a GP if you have an urgent
problem.
The surgery uses the ‘BADGER’ Out of
Hours GP Service on Wednesday, and
Thursday afternoons (from 1pm), and after
6.30pm
on
weekdays
and
on
weekends/bank holidays.
You will be automatically redirected to
BADGER when you call the Surgery
number.

When to use A+E or 999
Accident and Emergencies (A&E)
departments and ambulances (999) are for
people with life threatening problems or
critical illnesses that cannot be dealt with
by any of the above options.
Example of problems suitable for A&E:
 Sudden onset chest pain
 Collapse
 Severe breathing problems
 Broken bones
 Severe heavy blood loss
 Head Injuries
 Severe mental health disturbances such as
overdose
A&E does not stand for ‘Anything &
Everything’!
The following are a list of things
that are NOT counted as urgent:
 Repeat Medications
 Medications prescribed from
hospital out-patients
 Fit Notes (Sick Notes)
 Extenuating Circumstances
letters for Students & Medical
Reports
 Wanting to know investigation
results
 Wanting general advice about
medical problems – please use
NHS Direct or book a routine
appointment
Sometimes things become
urgent due to poor planning
such as running out of
medications. Prescription
requests should be ordered at
least 48 hours in advance of
when they are needed. We ask
that you plan your health care
needs (such as putting in your
request for repeat medication
on time) so as not to put an
unnecessary burden on the
system.
CHOOSE WELL
At Bath Row we want to help you to stay healthy,
and to be able to access the services you need
when you are unwell.
We are working with patients to reduce the
burden on A+E services, so that patients with
problems that can be dealt with by GPs,
Pharmacists and Walk-in-Centres know how to
access these services.
Often attending A+E for non serious problems
means you are not prioritised, you may see junior
members of staff, and you may have to wait for
long times - so using this guide should also
improve your experience of the health service
when you are ill.
To help with this we are monitoring all letters from
A&E to assess if patients could have used the
Duty Doctors, Badger or Walk-in Centre and may
write to patients to remind them of their options if
this is the case.
