It has been an eventful few weeks for the young Gunners following the lapathon.
First there was our second goal of the year. It was actually scored by the other team, BUT A
GOAL IS A GOAL. This was followed last week by our first win of the season. Yes, you heard it
right, folks, our FIRST WIN. Okay, okay the other team didn’t show up, BUT A WIN IS A WIN.
This week we faced a team that beat us earlier in the season by about 15-0, so this was going to
be a good test of how the boys have improved.
From the kick off our side was very competitive with both sides putting up a good defensive
effort. For the Gunners Rushan at the back kept clearing the ball out, with the few that got
through being picked up by Noah in goals. Our attack showed signs of improvement with good
runs by Mitchell and Declan. Late in the half some good attacking play from McCredie put them
4-0 up at half time.
The second half followed the same pattern. The highlights were Lachlan’s clearance from goals
to nearly half way (a competitor for Rushan’s crown as “Superboot”), Oscar’s gritty defence and
Jason’s runs up the field, one of which got the ball into their penalty area. Bradley and Armaan
are also continuing to improve.
In the end Guildford were the better side, but we managed to keep the score under double
figures. With this sort of improvement maybe we should have another lapathon before our last
game of the season. We’d be unstoppable!!!
U7 Newington Gunners

St Michaels (Pirates)

It was a game that could so easily have gone the other way. In fact it took until the 15th minute
for St Michaels to score despite repeated attacking forays from both teams. However, once the
1st goal was through a second followed 4 minutes later. Their attacks weren't that great, but the
goals scored were of the 1 on 1 variety and so I guess, the good defence we had exhibited in the
last few weeks, wasn't as apparent this week.
Right on half time, Vincent scored and we went to the break at 1-2.
There were some good signs again in the 2nd half with attacking flair shown by Tony and Mason.
Even though we had played half sized fields many times this year, the boys seemed a little
fatigued as the game wore on, with a noticeable absence of players running back to assist
Belinda in goals. Although Belinda made some great saves and also made some goal keeping
decisions by coming out to meet the ball, a couple of quality goals snuck in and the game
finished at 1-4
Thank you to the parents who brought their kids to the game. I was nice to have a couple of
reserves on hand to give the kids a rest after the last few weeks.

The U8’s started the game very strongly against St Bernadettes and had them on the ropes for
long periods in the first half. Daigo was in the thick of the action working very hard in the midfield
along with Thomas and Tryston. It was Tryston who opened the scoring with a well taken shot
after some good running by Ruben down the right flank. 1-0. We pressured their players well and
forced them into mistakes and another good shot was spilled by their keeper only for Dante to
latch onto the rebound for a great opportunist strikers goal. 2-0. Alex Palmer also made some
good runs down the left supported well by Sean and eventually the pressure was rewarded with
Tryston’s second. 3-0. There were some close calls towards the end of the half but the defence
was solid and Lawrence in goal was able to snuff out the limited attacks that broke through. The
second half was a different story with the heat taking its toll and Tryston having to retire with a
corked thigh. Lawrence was able to add some strength to the attack and helped relieve some
pressure but it was the defence that kept us in the game. Tyler was once again masterful in
central defence and marshalled his back line of Kevin and Sean well with Emma also making
some finger tip saves to keep a valuable clean sheet. Alex Park and Thomas kept the midfield
engine running but man of the match was split between Daigo, Lawrence and Dante for
consistent effort all over the pitch during the game. An enthralling game of football guys, well
done, our finals birth is ensured. Final score 3-0.

St Michaels (Rhinos)

It was a beautiful, almost summery morning for our last home game of the season and the team
was feeling confident about playing against a team that we had comfortably beaten earlier in the
season. However it would prove to be a much tighter game than expected, and in some ways we
were lucky to escape with a narrow win. In other ways, though, we had our unluckiest game of
the season with a number of great goal-scoring chances that were either fluffed or denied by bad
luck. The first half was a strange affair with the Gunners having the better of the game at either
end of the field - both attack and defense - but our midfield was missing in action which led to
disjointed match with a few break-outs but not much quality football being played. With some
positional re-arrangements in the second half, we played much better and dominated the second
half, although not on the scoreboard. What turned out to be the only goal of the match came
from a scramble in front of the goal-mouth with the ball nudged in by Lewis. It was ironic that for
all the classic goal-scoring chances we created (and fluffed), the only actual time the ball went
in the net was from an ugly goal-mouth scramble. Typical of our day was a great header from
Nuno which went down into the ground and then bounced OVER the cross-bar. Outstanding
performances this week from Greg Melnyk who was all over the field (as usual), Breanna who put
her body on the line in defense, and Player of the Week Michael who was a "rock" in defense.
Final score, won 1-0.

still be on so do not just stay at home; you will be letting your child's team down!

It’s raining, it’s Saturday! Is the game on? Your manager will know if the game is on, give them a call. Very
rarely is a decision made before Friday evening

It’s raining and it’s training tonight! Is training on? Managers/coaches call Auburn council to see if ground is
closed. You cannot train if the ground is closed, even if it’s not raining!! Parents and players call the manager
4. Please assist the coach and manager; they are working unpaid for your child. There may be nets to put up or
pull down, corner posts to stick in, players to be picked up (particularly if a parent has more than one child
playing in different teams) or shirts to wash.
5. This club and the NSW Churches Football Association have high expectations of our parents and players.
