You’ve finished your optometry studies.
CONGRATULA…Hang on. We need to get you
registered before you can practise...
...and that means making sure that you meet a
few registration standards.

First, we need to know that your English is good
enough to practice safely.

To start the registration process, graduates can
apply online.
Just go to the Optometry Board of Australia
website.
The earlier you apply, the sooner you’ll be able
to get registered and start work.

Once registered, you’ll also be endorsed to
prescribe scheduled medicines.

So make sure you’re familiar with our guidelines
for their use.

They’ll help in your role as a new optometrist.
Every year, when you renew your registration,
you’ll update us on whether you’ve met the
registration standards.
As well as if you’ve continued to develop your
optometry knowledge and skills.

As part of continuing professional development,
you’ll need to maintain a current CPR certificate
from an approved provider every three years.
“CONTINUAL PROFESSIONAL

And we’ll need to know if you haven’t practised
for more than 450 hours in the previous three
years.

which works in partnership with the Optometry

So remember to keep a record of your
Professional Indemnity Insurance, Professional
Development, and practice activities.
We expect you to follow our Code of conduct so
you can provide professional and safe care to
your patients. So familiarise yourself with the
policies, codes and guidelines.

about you. They could make a complaint about
your conduct, performance or health.
