We need to get you registered before you can practise... ...and that means making sure that you meet a few registration standards. Character slides off screen “REGISTRATION STANDARDS” text appears. First, we need to know that your English is good enough to practice safely. Optometrist character and a patient appear. Just go to the Optometry Board of Australia website. The earlier you apply, the sooner you’ll be able to get registered and start work. A laptop appears and opens up. The laptop closes and the text in the background says “APPLY EARLY” Once registered, you’ll also be endorsed to prescribe scheduled medicines. Optometrist character appears in middle of screen. So make sure you’re familiar with our guidelines for their use. Two documents appear – the guidelines for use of scheduled medicines. They’ll help in your role as a new optometrist. Every year, when you renew your registration, you’ll update us on whether you’ve met the registration standards. As well as if you’ve continued to develop your optometry knowledge and skills. “RENEW EACH YEAR” appears on screen. A document appears on screen titled “Registration Standards”. As part of continuing professional development, you’ll need to maintain a current CPR certificate from an approved provider every three years. “CONTINUAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT” appears on screen and then some letters disappear and it becomes “CPR” And we’ll need to know if you haven’t practised for more than 450 hours in the previous three years. We expect you to follow our Code of conduct so you can provide professional and safe care to your patients. They could make a complaint about your conduct, performance or health.
