OUR BIRDHAM CHARTER
Birdham Church of England Primary School
I come to Birdham School to learn and I should always try to work as
hard as I can.
I must remember that other children come to school to learn and I should
not do anything that stops them from learning.
I expect to feel safe at school. I know that all the adults in school will do
all they can to keep me safe. I know that I should do nothing to affect the
safety of others.
At school I expect to be treated with courtesy. I also know that in return I
must be well-mannered and polite to others.
I believe that friends are important and that I should show care for others
in my actions.
I know that helping others is important and that I should show the same
kind of tolerance and understanding towards others as I would expect
myself.
I know that there are times when we all make mistakes. Making errors is
a part of learning and I must make every effort to learn from mistakes.

During the day
We have a smart school uniform and I believe wearing it shows that I am
proud of Birdham School.
I know that it is wrong to swear. I do not swear and I do not want to hear
others swear.
I know that I must behave responsibly in and around school. It is
dangerous to run down corridors as this could result in people getting
hurt.
I know that I must sit quietly in assembly time and that I am expected to
walk sensibly into the hall at all times.
I believe that it is important to look after all resources in the school. I
know that books, computers, apparatus and equipment costs a great
deal of money and that I must respect this.
I believe that it is important to respect the wonder of God's creation in
our school's natural environment. I know that it is wrong to damage
planted areas and cause harm to wildlife. I know that I am fortunate in
having such wonderful grounds to support my learning.
I know that it is wrong to drop litter and to cause damage to property.
At playtime and lunchtime
Playtime is a special time. I enjoy playing with my friends as do others. I
believe that it is wrong to spoil other people’s games.
Sometimes children get left out of games which makes them feel lonely
and upset. I would not like that to happen to me so I will try to help them
to join in.
I believe that bullying and fighting is wrong. I will not be a bully. I do not
want to be bullied and I will not bully others. I know that if I am bullied
that I must go straight to my teacher, teaching assistant or the
Headteacher. The adults at Birdham School are there to help me straight
away. I will not hit back.
I believe that it is not telling tales to inform a teacher if I see bullying.
I know that bullies can be people who are in need of help themselves and
I will try and show them that I care.
I believe that it is wrong to steal. I would not expect my property to be
taken and I will not take or damage items that do not belong to me.

Sanctions
IF I BREAK THE RULES OF THE CHARTER I WILL BE TOLD AND
REMINDED OF THEIR IMPORTANCE.
IF I CONTINUE TO BREAK THE RULES THEN THE FOLLOWING MAY
HAPPEN.

The Headteacher may contact my parents asking them to come to
school to discuss my behaviour. My teacher and my parents may
agree some special rules to help me improve.

I may be kept in school for a 40 minute period of detention as a
punishment or to complete work that I should have done. When this
happens my parents will be informed in writing at least 48 hours
beforehand.

I may not be allowed to take part in a before or after school activity or
an off-site activity because I cannot be trusted.

If I cannot behave according to the Birdham Charter during lunchtime
then I may be suspended from school during the lunchtime break. If
this happened then my parents would be informed. I would have to
return to school for the start of the afternoon lessons. My parents
would be responsible for me during such lunchtime.

In very serious situations I may be suspended for a period of up to
three days. If this were to happen then I would be given work to do at
home. This could happen if I behaved in a very irresponsible manner
and where my actions have severely upset the learning, happiness or
safety of others at school. Finally the Governors may decide that
they do not want me to be allowed to go to Birdham School. Nobody
would want this but it is possible.

The Birdham Charter will help to keep me safe and happy at
school.
My Promise
 I have had this Charter explained to me by my teacher
and my parents.
 I will keep it safe and look at from time to time.
Remember Me?
Remember Me?
I am the boy who sought friendship;
The boy you turned away.
I, the boy who asked you
If I too might play
I the face at the window
When your party was inside,
I the lonely figure
That walked away and cried.
I the one who hung around
A punchbag for your games.
Someone you could kick and beat,
Someone to call names.
But how strange is the change
After time has hurried by,
Four years have passed since then
Now I’m not so quick to cry
I’m bigger and I’m stronger,
I’ve grown a foot in height,
Suddenly I’M popular
and YOUR’RE left out the light.
I could, if I wanted,
Be so unkind to you.
I would only have to say
And the other boys would do.
But the memory of my pain
Holds back the revenge I’D planned
And instead, I feel much stronger
By offering you my hand.
